So much potential

... bit grotty and run down and a bit poor… that does not normally put us off though so not sure what was wrong. The town was under going a fair bit of renovation and rejuvenation work and has a hell of a lot of potential as great place to visit…so perhaps in 5 years that is exactly what it will be. We went for a wander and found the amphitheatre which was like a mini coliseum in the center of town. It ...

And voila.... a river out of nowhere

Plan was to stay in Avignon but when we arrived we decided it was too big for us and after driving around the outide of the ramparts of the old city walls - very cool and the main thing we wanted to see - we made our way onwards to Fontaine de Vaucluse which is 20kms past Avignon. We arrived just before dark and found an Aire de Service at the edge of town where settled in for 2 days. The town ...

... the old stone replaced like this. But if it wasn’t done, there would be nothing left to see! Also, who’s to say what is ‘original’ and what is not after so long a time. For a building as old as this, I believe a few renovations have taken place over the years!

Just down the street was the Theater Antique, or Classical Theater. A century ...

... add details, and as Vincent so skillfully did: show movement and texture with brush strokes. As I photographer, I must only capture what is there. Although I can make some minute adjustments, it’s reality. So many times I wish a tree would just move to the left, the shadow would fall differently, or that a person would get out of the way! In the few ...

... and get the plane to Singapore. We should be sleeping in a hotel bed this time next week at Bintan Island and while this has been a fantastic trip I will be glad of a bigger bed and some luxuries.

Very warm regards to you all - we are missing the dogs heaps and we pat as many here as possible.

More news soon but not sure where from - it may not be until Bintan.

... to check out, the store owner curiously asked where I was from.

"Je suis de Houston" (I'm from Houston), I responded.
Immediately, he broke out in excitement, "Oh, vous voulez dire que vous êtes venu des États-Unis?" (You mean to say you're from the US?)
He then added, "J'ai un frère qui habite aussi au Téxas, mais je ne sais pas où exactement." (I have a brother who also lives in Texas, but I don't know exactly where). "Quand je lui téléphone ...

Hunting for Roman Remains - Part II

... trees ever, and while I was photographing the tiny little pink and red spotted buds, I suddenly understood the Japanese obsession with this little fairytale flower. The Roman Arc de Triomphe was nestled in the middle of a roundabout surrounded by yellow daisies. It was clearly reconstructed as the engravings seemed to be glued back together to the structure as a broken stone puzzle. All arches of triumph are built to commemorate a victory ...

Mistral, the Wind of Death

... They would sing, dance, act and basically do anything to try to top each other in order to sell tickets. One of the stranger promotions included a man dressed as a baby with a giant soother in a motorized carriage talking baby talk. Another included a circle of people dressed in oriental clothing doing some form of tai chi in the blazing sun. The only thing missing was a scary mime. Our last stop in Provence was Arles. We spent an afternoon in the charming town ...
