Einfach mal Urlaub machen

... s posture and speak for the group when we asked questions. The next thing on the agenda was small group discussions leading into a big group discussion about different news articles we'd provided and the complex ways they were all woven together in the problem of child rights. It was not like the "draw a leader" kind of activities we'd had earlier. If people weren't actually thinking critically and discussing as a group it was going to crash and burn. Jennie and I decided to gamble ...

Gambia Senegal tour by bike

... Kolda End: Diaoube Km: 119 After a few repairs to the bike fixing a wonky I set off in high spirits. Omelette and baguette for brunch filled a hole. This is a very popular and ever present snack washed down with a sugary Nescafe, made with evaporated milk and heaps of sugar. Not good for the teeth! The omelette is made by mixing eggs and slices of onion in a cup and pouring it in a pool of hot oil. It cooks in an instant ...

Introduction Reading for Day 2

... option would be to wander down the street to a friends' compound and find a nice shady spot under a mango tree to sit with your friends. You might also walk down to one of the many local beaches to spend the afternoon. If you are musically inclined, you might have brought a djembe, a hand-made, bongo-like drum. With this, you can work up a rhythm as someone provides a base while someone else adds a beat, and another maybe a solo. You will go faster and faster until your ...

Ndanka, ndanka: orientation and settling in

... for some of the people here. Baboucarr, who I already mentioned, is our Wolof teacher who usually guides us on our random expeditions, dealing with our slow-moving, loud, annoying group stumbling through Gambia with a patience, kindness, and humor that I can't begin to imagine. He's even taken us into his home and offered us his clothes, and at the end of the (very long) day he's more than willing to do more to answer our questions, offer us help, or just have fun with us. As Maya says ...

Birthdays, witchcraft and traffic-rage

... odd in the vendor's apparent faith in human nature - what was there to stop anyone rocking up and swiping the lot without paying? Then I saw it. Tied to a stick poking out of the woodpile was a small bottle filled with red liquid, attached to a feather: A JuJu. Gambians are by nature very superstitious (I can remember reading pre-departure an extensive list of things considered bad luck which included "whistling" "calling a baby beautiful" and "seeing bare buttocks ...
