... but decided just to have lunch. It was not a very nice day and we wanted clearer skies for picture taking at the castles. On the way home we started to hear thunder. Guenther loves this, I, however, do not. We were only about 1/4 of the way home and I didn't want to see how good the rain gear was. It was kinda freaky to have thunder with snow and rain coming down. After a couple of hours to get home, I was toast. A hot shower was in order. A late dinner with a couple of ...

Day 284 2 hrs 5 kms I follow the trail which cuts through a cow pasture, where a portly bovine dares stands in my way a la Lord of the Rings :"You shall not pass!" Finally I climbed up the sloped to get around her. Down at the bottom is a reservoir and the valley floor widens a little. For this next stretch I actually feel hot for the first time in who knows how long. Looks like it might ...

But another topic does almost bring him to tears. "Sud Tirol--that was part of Austria, and it was taken away from us." He's refering to ...

... of the Roman Empire. I didn't think of Romans trudging up and across these mountain passes... Now there's still a trail following this ancient route. Looks very enticing. Suddenly I remember my feeling yesterday--the feeling that this Alps hike is starting to feel like routine--just a little bit. Maybe this is time to cut the trip short, veer back into Italy, and go do something else for a while. I know my ...

Day 283 2 hrs, 4.4 kms Day totals: 16 hrs, 44.4 kms Dusk is settling in as I continue on through the forest. The valley is widening below and I can spot multiple villages scattered on the peaks, slopes and valleys of various hills in this larger valley civilization, centered around the city of Landeck. It strikes me a little odd that I don't really feel the burning desire to explore these villages. As a matter of fact, as I think of the days ahead, really all I want ...
