Last week I found myself with a persistent sore throat that seemed to get worse with each preceding hour until the next morning I awoke unable to swallow without severe pain and a slowly rising fever. I consulted my mamacita here, Dona Senovia who fed me, made me drink lemon water, something for my fever and I went back to bed. It wasn't until the following day I decided to go to the Health Center; despite all the horror stories I'd heard from other volunteers I was willing to take the chance...

To the Pacific Coast -- San Juan Del Sur

Many adventures in high winds around San Juan. Thankfully, we had a peaceful place to recharge between adventures.

Surfing Safari

Monday April 30 to Thursday May 3 San Juan del Sur is a Nicaragua´s most popular surfing desitination on the Pacific Coast. It is so popular that a whole 18,000 people live there. So its about the same size as my neighborhood back home in Mclean VA. We had just arrived in town with our friends Jessie and Mark and wandered about (or aboot if you are from the Toronto area) looking for a place to crash. The town is small and easy to walk around so we obviously had to visit every hotel in town. I...

... but swimming only possible in 1-2 second bursts unless you went way out past wave line, which given the rip, may not be the best idea! A pleasant afternoon, despite this & the bone shaking roads there.

Went south another day to Playa El Coco, which was lovely & desserted, understandably so when you see the roads and given the fact ...

Let´s Get EXTREME!

... We had to use
all fours, grabbing at rocks and vines to pull ourselves up. In a
couple of spots, we even had to wedge ourselves between two walls of
dirt to prop ourselves up as we climbed because there was too much
water on the ground. We felt pretty hardcore. Then we started passing
through a really cool cloud forest that reminded us of Fern Gully and
Twilight. Loved every second of it, especially pretending that Edward
Cullen was right ...

... He dropped his price to $8, still too much so I happily jumped ship when another taxi driver offered to take me for $5 (still too much, but I was tired, hungry – we had had some beans and tortillas in a polystyrene box on the bus, but that was all.) We drove for 10 minutes where he tried to persuade me to take the taxi the whole way to San Juan Del Sur. Um, this sounds familiar and wasn’t I (well Roman, Roland and I) caught out on this ruse before? No I said it ...

A death defying experience

... walking upright. I didnt know if I was going to be able to do it. The volcano suddenly looked a lot bigger and higher and the crater looked further away. I started talking aloud to Gordon. "Come on help your sister out here" I mumbled over and over again, grasping at rocks with my fingers, my legs aching from hauling up my body, sweat pouring down my body in rivulets. Alan was behind me, he slipped a bit but righted himself. I felt like I was climbing a massive mountain but ...

Hola ola (life's a beach)

... merely consisted of towing a line on the way there and back, making it basically a surfing trip, which was fine and dandy by me. Playa Hermosa basically cannot be accessed by land, so we had the whole place to ourselves, and the surf was quality - a perfect scenario really. Some of the lads from San Juan were supposed to come too, but our lack of communication options meant that we couldn't get in touch with them to relay the rendez-vous info, but it was just as well ...

... to the hostel to find some really terrible but incredibly funny karaoke going on, the hostel staff where drunk and apperently thats what they do every time they hit the drink.
I had a 10am flight (and a shuttle picking me up at 7am) the next day so I left them to the karaoke and went to bed.
Next morning I awoke feeling great (I was of to Costa Rica in a few hours), unfortunatly this feeling didnt last long, I looked at the time and it was 10am already, I had missed my flight.

We willen eigenlijk vroeg gaan slapen. Stefaan gaat dan vlug op zoek naar een winkeltje en komt terug met een gebraden kip (pollo asado) en een tros banaantjes. We smullen lekker van ...
