Earlier this morning, we sadly departed from our hunting lodge in the countryside and went to Palermo to return our hire car. After a very restful nights sleep we decide to squeeze our way out of the marina and move to anchor on Volcano Island so we can get an early start tomorrow at 4am to Palamero. Having been warned not to wear our best bathers (as the smell never comes out), we had come prepared, wearing old underwear, which went straight into the bin afterwards! George braved it first, as I wanted to take a photo of him. Some of the mud, and the steam coming from the ground was quite hot, and the sulphur fumes were powerful. I did make it into the mud too, and found a nice sloppy smooth ...

... our blank expressions must have made it obvious that hadn't a clue to what he was saying and a young guy (Giusseppi) with good English became our translator for the day. He and his partner, Delia, hailed from a little town near Milano and had driven all the way down to Milazzo for their summer break. We all promptly adopted them and peppered them with all sorts of questions on being Italian and being in Sicily. Suffice to say, that southern Italy was as foreign to them as ...
