Trans Mongolian Railway - old style luxury travel
In these days of cheap airline flights, it's relatively easy to zip around the globe, hopping from one city to another, sometimes with a brief view from the window. Perhaps we forget that this has only been the case for 30 or 40 years, before that long distance travel was the domain of the train. In South America we found train travel to have gone …
Ulaan Bataar: Emerging From Behind the Curtain
We rode the Trans Mongolian Express for a memorable 31 hours from Beijing to Ulaan Bataar.
Our first look at Ulaanbaatar from the train was of brightly colored roofs of houses that looked like polka dots decorating a grassy hillside. We disembarked at the clean, modern station and stepped into a brilliantly sunny day. The city skyline, a hodge …
Camels and vodka
This winter in Mogolia the temperature dropped to a record minus 70;
10 million of mongolia's 40 million animals perished.
For us backpackers this meant two things - plenty of vodka would need to be consumed to stay warm and free food was to be had everywhere!!
Luckily it was a balmy minus 20 when we arrived. We were joined …
Crossing the border
It was INSANE.
So I had some trouble in Beijing finding the bus and station etc so I took a taxi. I arrived in Erlain at about midnite so I was stuck with the hotel the taxi driver picked. It was OK but I was only there for 6hr. My research said there was trains every day and about 6 buses everyday. I couldnt find them and at the train station …

The room is very small but I dont need a big room. Bonus is lock box in the room cos pickpockets are active near the State Department Store. Great central location. Staff are not particularly helpful, seem more interested to sell as many tours as possible. Their tours are very expensive. No breakfast or hot water this morning and very noisey

In a good location, it is a hive of activity for travelers going and coming from the Mongolian countryside. The showers run long and hot with city water. The communial area is comfortable. 3 shared computers and wifi! The kitchen can be used for your own cooking but isn't set up very well for that. They offer laundry service at a slightly lower rate than other places in town. Our double was cheap and had a TV, small fridge and small lockbox. The room was too small for anything but sleeping but the communal room made up for that.
The main reason for staying at Khongor Guest House is to organize your tour or car rentals to the country with the informative tour books, other like-minded travelers, and office staff right there. They don't make you feel obligated to use their tour service, but if you do, they will make sure you have a room even when they are 'full.'
Free pick-up from the train station. They will pick up and drop off to the airport if you are staying 3 days or more.....

Really helpful and informative staff who helped us organise our three day trip into the countryside. Nice communal area with free tea and coffee in the hostel, reasonably priced rooms and very friendly and homely atmosphere. Good location, very easy to find and central along Peace Avenue. Good spot to stay while in Ulaan Baatar
