Saibadee!!!

We got dropped off at Vientiane bus station just after 6:00am, despite Raj's bus buddy who does the journey every other week reassuring him that the bus never gets in before 7. Early morning arrivals do have their benefits and we were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise heading into town, and the opportunity to watch monks receiving alms along the streets whilst hanging out of the back of our extremely crowded songthaew.

A Thanksgiving Trek in Northern Laos

... find), and some green beans. I know, there was no stuffing, but it was the best I could do. I overheard some Americans talking and found out that a cafe down the street was serving pumpkin pie. Everything was Thanksgiving-y.

It was in this reflective Thanksgiving spirit that I began to think to myself about travel.
I have had an amazing trip, but after almost 3 months on the road I thought to myself about how much I had been on the receiving end during this experience: buying food ...

... home-made prosthetics from victims, and examples of the medical ones donated by foreign countries. We watched an excellent documentary about a Big Bomb Disposal Squad – Laotians trained by an Australian bomb expert – that travel around the country diffusing and removing bombs. They focused on one that some children found beside a school (where one child was killed when playing with a bombie), another beside a jungle village where some of the ...

Laos Airlines....dodgy

... were going to crash.

The plane seemed to be accelerating while descending and the nose of the plane was going down...I have never been so frightened in my life. The pilot made a last minute left turn and then we landed on the runway but we were swerving all over the tarmac while he was trying to control the plane....FINALLY we slowed down and came to a stop. Thank god we are alive!

But we still had another flight to ...

Same same but always different!

I know I've been horrible lately for blog updates so here's what's been happening this past week:

Oct 18- The 20 hour bus journey wasn't that bad overall actually. Must be getting used to it! From what i've seen so far Laos is beautiful! Really green and full of mountains. We're still debating on if it's more like Thailand or Cambodia.

Oct 19- Today we spent some time at the National Museum learning about the history ...

Capitol City - Boat Race

... on us, or any torrential downpour, we counted ourselves lucky but were not quite sure if it was worth the £2.50 saving (each!) but def. one to talk about!!
We had been told that Vientiane was quite a sleepy city, but we managed to time our arrival with the end of Buddhist lent, and there was a huge water festival gong on. The river front was heaving with people and stalls and such a great atmosphere with BBQ's going on in every side street. We found a ...

... L'Arc de Triomphe of Laos. For a cheap price we decided to walk up to the top to view Vientiane from a different angle. On the way down, inside there were a few stalls and dimwit thought he would purchase an American style wife beater in pink, which according to him suits him well. Whilst the rest of the group headed for the benches to hide from the sun baker thought he would give Dom a ...

... wrong way, which sucks. More often than not I found an X. It became a joke, that if you saw me running down a street, trail, or back alley, run the opposite direction. Numb Nuts gave me **** about that while we were in the circle after the race by asking "How many turn arounds did you run into?" I said "I don't know, I lost count." Some laughed. He says "Is that because you encountered a lot or can Americans just not count that high?" Everyone laughs, including myself. It's that kind of ...

... cycling shape might have well been the Pyrenees, to a golden wat, which was supposedly a big attraction, but you know, at this point I have seen so many wats, that unless it actually contains buddha himself, I am just not that impressed. Don't get me wrong, it was purdty to look at, but I enjoyed joking around and hanging out with Liron for the day more than the stuff we saw....like I've said before, its about the people more than the places.
