... did but apparently not, so we went to dinner in town at 9.30. The waiter was overjoyed to see us but managed to keep a surly demeanour . It was the only experience so far that was less than ordinary. The food was terrible. We thought we were ordering pâté but the goose liver with fat was just that. Goose livers whole in lard. We had to scrape the fat off as it was swimming in it. I did have a nice soup but that ...

... to bed. The result of that is we didn't go to the opening ceremony which is on now. Actually Gary and Allan were told not to go as they both had been unwell. Alan is in stroke with Warren. For you non paddlers that means they are the first paddlers in the boat and the set the pace for the boat. In other words very needed. Of course they will be there tomorrow as the first day is the 2000m races which are on the river Tisza. A hard race but exciting.

I was going to Romania but not via Szeged. But that's where I am, and tomorrow Romania.

Long story but basically I couldn't find accommodation - well cheap accommodation - in Debrecen, the town in eastern Hungary I was going to cross the border from. So caught a train here instead on the recommendation of the hostel staff. They even booked me two nights in their assoc hostel ...
