We are allowed a late start today, so we leave the hotel at 9.30am Our room looks out toward a school, and the road in front of the school is being resurfaced. As the kids start arriving for school at about 7.30 there is a woman set up with her mobile kitchen and she is making hot wraps Goreme the kids for either breakfast or lunch. She puts the mixture, like pancake mix on a round hot plate and spreads it thinly. Then she adds vegetables or other toppings and rolls ...

... seats Yuan can buy -- 550RMB ($90) per adult for a soft sleeper berth. I think the kids were half price. Olivia asked, "Are we getting first class?" Well, we get our own berth (and because there are 4 berths to a cabin, we actually get our own cabin). We have unlimited access to boiled water and a basic western toilet. (You just need to look past the fact that everything that goes into the toilet goes through a little hole directly onto the train ...

... the show as the locals sing, perform in their boats and dance. The idea was great but I guess the budget isn’t quite at Olympic standards and it felt a bit like a school play! It ended very abruptly however this is apparently typical of any Chinese show. When we realized it was over, there was just westerners sat waiting to politely clap as all the Chinese had left in the previous 10 minutes and the performers were already clearing away! We are still learning the Chinese ...
