Magnificent Mamallapuram & Tantric Tirumala

... in the main figure, but also in the surrounding scenes. The whole area is smoothed over a rocky outcrop of solid, hillside, with intermittent (often huge) boulders scattered around. Craftsmen have cut & carved a total of 13 caves out of rock here, but the greatest prize of all is Anjuna’s Penance.

The world’s largest bas relief measures 30 x 12 metres and is carved onto the rock face of a huge whale-back shaped rock, on the lower level of the ...

Temples, temples and ashrams of Tamil Nadu

... impressive. I returned part of the way down, to peer thro’ some other locked gates, at rooms with pillars not unlike Madurai’s temple museum, altho’ these didn’t seem so well looked after. This, I believe, was the Sri Thayumanaswamy Temple.

I was invited to take a free lunch in the kitchen dining area, but I wasn’t at all hungry, so declined but offered to help to pick up used tumblers left by earlier diners. I returned to the ground floor, where ...

Chill weather and French influence

... view of the city was incredible and made up for it. The French influence is all over the town and it's fun to just walk around after the sun sets (when it's cooler out) and check out the garden, architecture, and streets. There are several yummy bakeries and a ton of coffee cafes though I still got my coffee from the stands on the streets with the locals, yum! We ended up meeting up with some fun travelers and invited them back to our rooftop ...

Baguettes!

... different feel to it, it's not like anywhere else we've been to in India. The town is separated by an open canal and the French part is closest to the sea. "White Town" as it's known locally, houses the majority of the guest houses and French/Indian restuarants. The wide streets have French names and big villa type houses with balconies. We can get baguettes and cheese, it's great for a little respite! We've room hopped a bit here. Initially we ...

Avalanche, The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu

... br>

It was almost 5pm by now and we had to return to the main road before dark, so reluctantly we left this pristine wilderness. The drive back was rewarded with innumerous sightings of sambar, bison, barking deer and night jars at every turn of the road. A pair of cute, fat, furry, russet brown weasel like creatures scurried across the road. They may have been Nilgiri lemur, Ramesh called them "keeri". This is definitely the place ...

... Mate this is a mistake we booked 2 sleepers?" He just said "Yeh this is 2." Rather flatly. Hastie and i looked at each other, knowing we were spooning that night in the bus! I was funny hey i was sleeping half in the aisle Hasitie had a leak in the air conditioner onto his face all night. Yup first class alright! Then to top it off the bus broke down in the middle of nowhere and the driver just gets out opens the luggage compartment and starts tipping ...

Indian tourism

... bananas to the wild monkeys. It was so funny I was practically crying... It was hard not to anthropomorphise them as they ran after the bus on their hind legs jumping at the windows and tucking as many bananas into their little cheeks as they could! I got some action shots too. The falls themselves were filled with Indian tourists. The men had stripped to their ...

... were just sending her on some local tours and i was able to go along. the first one we went on was a half day tour of bangalore. reading through the list of places we were to visit we couldnt pronounce any of them, so took that as a sign that they much be cool and historical. contrary to what we though, the highlights of this trip included a display on the invention of the zipper and ball point pen (both by americans i believe), a visit to a ...
