Cambodia 30th June - 5th July Days 153 - 158 Like with Laos, my time in Cambodia was limited. After an interesting border crossing from Laos, (yes, bribes were required, an American almost didn't get in but and extra US$20 ensured she was on her way again) we ended up on Kratie...not quite where we'd been promised when we were sold the ticket. I'm writing this part of the blog from southern Vietnam. It would be easy to get frustrated whilst traveling in Cambodia and Vietnam; I've rarely got w...

Welcome to Cambodia

"You should come to England, mate. The women will f**king love you" - Dan, to a border cop. I think he was being sarcastic. From Aranyaphratet, Thailand, we hire a tuk-tuk to the border. The driver takes us to a dodgy visa shop. We say no, thank you, the original request of the border was fine thanks. (At this point we are utterly fatigued by scams and attempted rip-offs and only have an hour to make it through the border). So she pulls out.... and takes us to another, slightly fancier-lookin...

Holy ****. We regretted agreeing to taking a cab 'just the two of us' the minute the driver handed a policeman a wad of cash then had his friend jump in. We didn't know these streets and sure as hell didn't know the dust-tracks. In due time we see a coach-full of exhausted looking tourists drive by, which teaches us three things: 1) we are probably going the right way, at least kind-of 2) They are knackered and miserable and therefore have not enjoyed the swift, smooth, if argumentative, ride...

I've been traveling with some sort of weird throat disease. I've gone through all of the most horrible possibilities - throat cancer, lyprocy, rabies, Malaria and Dengue Fever (at the same time) and other ones I've made up names for like S.E.A.F. (South East Asia Funkalicious). I haven't been sick in a while so I've become a bit of a hypochrondriac. The good thing is that in Thailand healthcare is cheap and good and available on almost any corner. You can't say that about the States. Except n...

... strange.
After we’d finished the Bayon, we headed to lunch with our tuk-tuk driver Chin. I had a very excellent chicken spicy Khmer soup.
From lunch, we headed out on a longer trip to Banteay Srei, a temple about 20km out of Siem Reap. The kids had a bit of a nap on the way and it was an altogether lovely and interesting ride out there. Banteay Srei isn’t exactly much to write home about. It’s a beautiful temple but it’s nothing incredible ...

... and western delicacies. I ordered a gourmet sandwich and Gabe ordered something local and we were in heaven!

Feeling thoroughly refreshed we walked back to our tuk tuk driver and he pointed to where he would be waiting, then we walked across the bridge into Angkor Wat. The bridge spans quite a distance and takes you over a moat that is so large it could be a lake! On the other side a long cobbled walkway led to the ...

... to Angkor What?, of course, where completely unexpectedly I bumped into a group of people I'd travelled with through Laos! It's crazy how often you bump into the same people over and over again. The Angkor draught flowed, as you'd expect for $1 a glass.

Day 3 - I was determined to do a bike ride round the temples, despite the distances being in the tens of km and me being ridiculously hungover. The girls, however, were not up for it and spent the whole day in bed - lazy. The ...

The whole site is amazing to see and the scale of it all is mind blowing. Most of the main attractions are in the process of being restored or have undergone restoration. There are so many collapsed buildings that it is like a giant jigsaw ...

... engulfing some of the temples rocks and walls. We visit the largest, Angkor Thom which was the capital of the city after Angkor Wat during the latter stages of the Khmer empire and through the reign of several kings. Other temples we visited included Bayon and Baphuon.

We are extremely hot and decided to head back for an early lunch, then sleep for most of the day before we have an early dinner and an early night.
