... us much of the history and mistreatment of the various Chimpansees before they were rescued and brought to Eden. Fortunately this was often offset again with the successful social and physical development of the Chimps within Eden.

Their stories before Eden are as varied as they are sad and sometimes even horrid. Chimps locked on chains no more than a couple of meters long or used fro tricks in a traveling circus. From ones put on display in casino's or ...

... managed to enter the park
at 12:30pm on the first day and made our way to the camp. Even being
the hottest part of the day we still manage to tick off elephant (first
animal); warthog; wilderbeest; zebra and a great sighting of rhino, as
well as a wide range of antelope. The late afternoon drive was great as
well and provided much of the same, including giraffe and some of what
makes Kruger so special! The small creatures, prolific birdlife and
amazing ...

Berg en Daal Restcamp Kruger

Berg en Daal Restcamp, Kruger, 20th September 2009

We were up early and ready to queue at the gate, and yes it was a big queue. We drove towards Lower Sabie Restcamp keeping on the tar road for most of the way. Paul was beginning to get a bit disappointed as he hadn't seen many big cats in Kruger, then as luck would have it Paul spotted a leopard in a tree quite a distance from the roadside. We managed to get some quite good ...

Our first night on Safari in Africa

... to explain so I'll try to upload the video so you can really experience it. Then Nicholas told us that the elephant weighs about 6000g, but we dont know how many pounds that is =/ but obviously its a LOT. He also told us that the elephant's trunk can hold up to 10 gallons of water and the trunk itself is so heavy that a human could not lift it up). We saw all types of animals that looked like deer. Nyala, Impala and a bunch of others I can't pronounce. (Alyssa: Steenbok ...

... a home in the township or build a shack in the compound of the home. The government is building low-income homes for these people. Before the government banned new structures from being built many of them when up. Most of them have been torn down and the families moved to other homes. Some still exist but they have only a pump and an outhouse compared to the other homes having electricity ...

Big Five Buzz

... is the luck of the draw. I was searching for cheetahs and leopard in particular on day 3 but they are very shy and hard to see. Dom my friend grew up just outside of Kruger and has been to the park many, many times and even she hasn't seen a leopard. The sad thing was we didn't even see any elephants on Day 3 and I saw tons of them on the first 2 days. I guess they all moved on to different areas. I didn't get to see cheetahs or leopards but it was a ...

... I'm going to lead a talk about why we live in a house. I'm bringing pictures of scary animals and storms with me. This should be interesting. At the Disabled Center I have once again ended up the only volunteer going, so it's really busy and frustrating because instead of being able to teach people things I just give them work without the time to explain how to do it. The def man I am working with, Bonginkosi, (I think it's a pretty common name ...

... featured on the drive to Badplaas, so at least I was a little bit prepared for it to follow me around when I got to the resort. Most of the people that were there were locals from the area near by. Spending my weekend at the resort isn't really how I want to spend my weekends here, but it was an adventure nonetheless, and I only spent 140 rand, that's 20 dollars. This weekend the house is emptying out again, but I am staying behind and ...

Laughing Hyenas and Other Tails* from the Bush

... the guides heard. Leopards are awfully difficult to spot, and this was to be a great find. We rode around for quite some time in search of our prey, with Tumelo's eagle eyes leading the way from his perch atop the hood. Tumelo was aided by a very powerful search light. At one point, I retrieved a small, freebie flashlight given out by some utility company. I switched it on and declared to LJ in a whisper, "I'm going to help look." I guess the suggestion was comical given that my ...

Nightly game drive amidst elephants and zebras

... skin, and then green as the branch it was sitting on. He pointed out snakes we never even saw because they were small and at a distance and a couple of genets and civets. We also learned why wildebeest and zebras like to live together. It's their way of preventing lion attacks, because lions single out one animal, whereas with the zebras they have a hard time focussing because of all the blacks and whites and lines; they blur into one ...
