... pate and crackers, followed by a diary entry. One of our favourite things to do is race down all the hikes, timing ourselves. This was a new personal best, it took us four hours to get up there... Pounding down in an hour and a quarter. Our shins do take a battering. Futaleufu was an awesome place to finish up on the Carretera Austral. For us, we could have stayed a while longer. We pack up the tent and hop onto a bus, the Argentine Lake District awaits, they'd better have some soft ...

We continue south through Patagonia, the road from El Bolson drops out of the valley onto a high flat plain with the mountains in the distance, which means the roads are long and straight with only the occasional bend to keep you focused. ... and starts gaining. We reach the bus at 5.58am knackered but happy its still there. And what a luxury, its a big one. Parked just past the big one is our 8 seater with 7 already in it. Amandas bag fits in the boot and she squeezes into the back seat which 3 others already occupy. That leaves me in the front seat....with my pack on my lap....for 90 minutes! I cant feel my legs after 40...

With no direct buses to Futaleufu we are dropped at Villa ...

... eisteddfods and there are lots of little places offering typical Welsh teas! We found a lovely campsite close to the sea in Puerto Madryn and spent 2 nights there. The first night we only set up camp at 9:30pm as we had the oil changed in the car, and the wheels balanced. We could only start this process at 4:00 as the garage places only open then! A long day.... But it was a good job done... Something that has interested me in South America ...

... instructions in Spanish "adelante, alto, adelante..." and paddling as hard as I could we survived. What a relief! I was ready to get off and eat. But I had 3 hours to go. Holy ****. From then on until the end I was more confident yet much colder. The cold water from the snow above together with my anxiety got me shivering non stop. Pedro the boss who was on his Cat rapht making sure we were all gonna survive gave us wind and water proof jackets which did the job wuite ...
