Can Tho - Yay.

Bit annoyed at the Kim Co Hotel.

Went to pay up and all of a sudden the room was 300,000 dong a night. I thought maybe something got lost in translation, but unless I'm starting to hear 3’s as 2’s, they did a dodgy. What’s more, I added up the bill lat** on and I hadn’t realised they had thrown a random 40,000 dong on top. I argued about it but they w**en’t budging, and I didn’t really see what my options w**e. It’s not the money, it’s t...

Can Tho - City of Sampans

Phew, up at 4:30,

Quick shower then headed downstairs to wait out front for little old lady. Bang on 5 she turned up and we walked down to the pair where a little sampan was tied up. There was another guy in the back, and the lady explained to me she was feeling a bit sick, so her brother was going to take me instead. Sure lady, that's your brother. Obviously she hawks on behalf of the sampan drivers, and then takes a cut. Wasn’t bothered though, cause travel guides I’d re...

Rivertrip

There is a great boat trip you can do here in Can Tho. You must start at dawn and go down to the dock and find a boat woman to take you down the river where there is a large floating market. Locals trade fruit and vegetables on the river. You must buy in bulk here. Not really the place to buy half a pineapple lets say. It makes for some interesting photographs. Unfortunately our camera battery died halfway through. We still got some good pics though. Later, the boat lady brings you through so...

Floating Markets on the Mekong

Can Tho is a big city in the Mekong Delta, famous for its colourful floating markets. We get there from Chau Doc in an air conditioned Ford transit minibus for USD$5 a head. Frustratingly, the driver drops us off, not at the bus station, but about 3km out of town in the middle of nowhere, beside a group of mean-looking motorcycle taxi drivers. Of course, when we get dropped off, we haven't a clue where we are, and the map in photocopied lonely planet pages doesn't really help us. So it is nec...

Our little boat down the Mekong

... tea and some more tropical fruit. His son is studying computer networks and took a bit of a shine to Chris when he found out that is what he did for a living.

The water level was still too high so Lan took us for a beer along the river front with all the locals. They don't sit around watching TV on an evening they drink coffee (with ice, bit weird) next to the river.

The next stop once we were back on the boat was Phu An Village and another ancient house for ...

Giornata piena di sorprese... Can tho

Mekong Delta Bicycle Tour

... I wandered down to the central market and explored the stalls. Supper that evening was at a restaurant by the river... I thoroughly enjoyed a dark beer that is hard to find in Vietnam and was such a nice change!

On Tuesday we were all awoken very early (4 or 5am) by a marching band procession on the street in front of the hotel! After breakfast we got on a boat and visited the Cai Rang Floating Market. It was different that the other ...

Mekong Delta, 22 - 23 April 2009

... market ... Quite a hectic schedule. We are just not used to being herded around places with 20 - 30 other people! However, we did make the choice to spend a small amount extra to stay overnight at a homestay rather than stay in a hotel with the rest of the crowd in Can Tho. This certainly was the highlight of the trip. There were just six of us altogether. We left the others at the hotel, had a minibus take us ...

Warm Beer and Bread

... Salmonella hot to get it on with some ugly Ecoli bacteria and who knows what that would produce. On that same note, Vietnam has been pretty underwhelming in the culinary department. Very uninspired. Fellow travelerss say that they think even the Pho back in the states is way better. The bread is good though; slightly crusty but fluffy on the inside. That is my favorite thing so far. Motre later. I am tired and I have HBO in my room
