Not much for a Capital!

After the disaster (health wise) that was Vang Vieng, it was time for us to move on. We booked ourself a "VIP" Bus to Vientiane, departing Vang Vieng at 2pm. We finally departed at 3.30pm and it was a totally uneventful and quite boring journey down. We arrived in Vientiane at 8pm and started the long walk around trying to find a Guest House. After about an hour of searching, and only finding places with 1 room or stupidly expensive prices, we found Haysoke's place. 5 of us had to share a Fam...

Journeys from hell.

After the fun that was Dondet with it's Typhoon, it was time to move on. It was also time for our group of 6 people to split up again. Gareth, Dave and I would be heading north to Vientiane (to get our Vietnam visas sorted) and then to Hanoi, whereas Nick, Kenny and Annie would be heading west to Bangkok. We left Dondet at 11am on the Wednesday, starting off with the short ferry trip over the Mekong to Don Khong. Due to 36 hours of non-stop torrential rain the river was flowing quickly and th...

Relax it’s not such a Laosy place!

After disappointing time in Vietnam our first stop in Laos was the capital Vientiane (pronounced VNTN).

The weather seemed to have followed us to Vientiane and we didn't have the most auspicious start. We were told by several travel agents in Vietnam that the journey between Hue and Vientiane would take anywhere between 20 and 30 hours so we were therefore a little surprised to arrive 8 hours earlier than scheduled into Vientiane at 3am in the middle of a huge thunder storm. We had to ...

From the Nation's Capital - Vientiene Laos

If every tourist in Laos bought five-hundred scarves there would still be at least two left for each and every citizen. Guide books are an absolute necessity for the kind of travel that we do. They are the road map for our overall travel plan. We're staying at the guide book recommended Haysoke Guest House in Vientiene. The walls are paper thin and the air inside reeks of Chinese cooking. Yes guide books are a necessity but, almost everything you read in them should be taken with a grain of s...

Laos - laid back and loving it

... ones to board our slow boat. Last to arrive = cheap seats at the back = wooden benches with no cushions because everyone else is hogging them, next to the noisy engine and next to the smelly toilet! To be honest it wasn’t all that bad, after coming to terms with the fact that we had a very long journey ahead of us everyone soon sprawled out on the floor and started chatting or playing cards. Surprisingly we arrived safe, dry and even in the ...

Laos, pronounced many a different way!

We had heard people say that the bus from Hanoi to Laos was hell - 24 hrs, border crossing, crammed bus, etc., but it wasn't too bad. The blokes in charge of the bags of rice on board could have been less dictatorial and they had to be persuaded to drop us off at least somewhere near our destination, but what can you do!
After the success of biking around Hue, we decided to bike around Vientiene, seeing their "Arc de Triumph", the palace, a few temples and one of the better ...

... wrong way, which sucks. More often than not I found an X. It became a joke, that if you saw me running down a street, trail, or back alley, run the opposite direction. Numb Nuts gave me **** about that while we were in the circle after the race by asking "How many turn arounds did you run into?" I said "I don't know, I lost count." Some laughed. He says "Is that because you encountered a lot or can Americans just not count that high?" Everyone laughs, including myself. It's that kind of ...

Lovely Laos

... English at a local school. It was just a few days but perhaps the most memorable of my whole trip so far.

Laos is really all about two main things. The Mekong river and the people. Sitting by the river with a cold beer, watching the fisherman, contemplating life, the meaning of existence and where you can buy some nice salted pistachios is a joy.
