... over 4 hours and I have to admit I was quite sore again by the time we got back to the hostel. But this time it was just sore and stiff rather being in a lot of pain! It was a nice way to spend the morning and early afternoon before relaxing for a little while around the hostel. Claire, Sinead and I made dinner together again (I washed up again) in the evening and got talking about random facts. According to Clare two gingers can't "mate" together because the child's ...

... in the house. I did it for about 8 months (mum had bought me a spider catcher for Christmas which definitely helped). Don't get my wrong, I couldn't sleep with one in the room but I would try and catch it! We stopped at Charleston with the aim of seeing the glow worms in the caves by kayak, but we had no internet to check timings and missed out by 10 minutes. There was nothing nearby so we had to forget that adventure and ...

... truly is. And perhaps it's because my experience mirrors so many others who have had the chance to travel like this, and I know experience is the same as theirs. You inexplicably run into the same people throughout your travels, and even after just a few days you feel like you've known them forever. And suddenly you have an entire community of new friends from all over the world. Let's hope for better weather so I don't get all philosophical and melodramatic ...

      WESTPORT - LYELL, BULLER GORGE

Not much to report today .... feet a tad sore after yesterday's effort and it rained a lot, so we spent quite some time in Westport Library where it was warm and dry and the chairs were comfy.

Drove through the Buller Gorge to a DOC campsite just before Murchison. Just made a quick spaghetti sauce, which was exactly what we felt like. Really good on a cold night.
