It's not right, I don't get it...

10/04 Arrived in Hanoi after a couple of Air Asia flights. A taxi from our guesthouse met us at the airport, which was great. Iy was a reasonably long trip into the old quarter of Hanoi and the streets were crazy. We didn't realise that people drive on the righ-hand side of the road, so that was a big surprise! I really can see why it's hazardou...

Entry 6 of a trip titled: Getting Out of the Comfort Zone: Life Doesn't Always Go To Plan...

I arrived in Sydney in June/July 2007, bright-eyed, a little emotional and with high hopes for the future... nearly a year on, and I have come full circle, resigned from my position, and am about to embark on an international adventure, including Asia, Africa, and Europe. This is about following my heart rather than my head, venturing into the unknown and pushing me out of my comfort zone. I'm both excited and petrified, but I'm really happy that I've made and acted on this decision. Struggling for shelter

After finally finding our intended hotel, Mike and I settled into our room at the Hanoi Star II. Mike was feeling a bit sick so I left him to nap while I went to explore the city. Before I could leave the small reception area though, I was bombarded with questions from the receptionist about our stay. When I mentioned that we were looking into g...

PS from Vietnam

PS from Patrick: During our travels we use the "Lonely Planet" guidebook (one for each country) and another one (usually the "Rough Guide") so that we can compare recommendations and not end up on the same tourist trail as everybody else. The very comprehensive guide "Southeast Asia on a shoestring" which the younger backpackers have with them h...

The train trip from Saigon to Hanoi was romantic in a Paul Theroux's 'Great Train Bazaar' kind of way. We met people from not only Vietnam, but Japan and Holland. From the windows we saw tropical jungles and factories, then went to sleep and woke to rice paddies from which limestone mountains soared. It was also cold, and we were not going to se...
