Hocking and spitting!

Sara:

...Seriously people think it is acceptable to hock up disgusting things and spit all over the floor, wether that be in the street, a cafe, bus, or train, people spit everywhere here!

We got here after a horrific 10 hour bus journey, it is very hot, about 33 degrees.

The bus seemed to have a problem with its suspension, and we were sitting over the back wheels going up, down and around rocky mountains. We ...

... going to the police station! a woman took us here. I always say that the police should help the people, not terrifed them - and this is true here too!

We are well - it is hot and humid, and Billy told us to eat less and to drink more water - I tasted their tea and coffee: not recomendated but that's what they have. water we buy - but there are containers of purified free water everywhere - Eyal is afraid to drink it.

Xingyi-Guiyang

... really are enjoying delicious food. For example, for lunch today, we shared three dishes with steamed rice. A whole river fish, chilli ginger beans and garlic water spinach with steamed rice and washed down with green tea.

When we arrived in this rather large town of Guiyang I wish we had the movie camera directed on us. Helen was unsure of the way to the hotel so we stopped at some lights and she grabbed a taxi for us to follow. The traffic parted amid a deluge ...

Making it more exotic

... think it was a marketing gimmick," she said. She added that she felt a little uneasy with the sudden change of role from a government official to a national celebrity. Tourism official becomes an attraction herself "What I really wish is for more people to come and know my village and its people." Professor Mao Shoulong at Renmin University of China said A Xiang-yi's sudden rise to stardom can be seen as an "unexpected opportunity". "Even deliberately crafting a celebrity ...

Bye bye Guizhou

In our daily walk before breakfast, Monika joins a Taiqi group, and I play badminton for sme minutes with local people at the park. Then some poor breakfast, a quick shower and head for our first visit: Qingyan Old Town. A typical scenery of chinese ancient films, a grey wall sorrounding the town, small buldings with inner terraces, narrow stony streets...and the non-stopping rain. We must buy an umbrella and Michael also to continue the visit ...

Biggest cave in China

We must check out at 8:00, because we need more than 3 hours to cover 145 km from Anshun to Zhijin, where te biggest karst cave in China is waiting for us. The roads are a torture, but we hope it will be worth all the suffering. We are visiting Daji cave, an enormous area under a mountain, with many huge "rooms", in which football grounds should fit widely. Lots of different karstic ...

Huaxi scenic Area

... down and we could ask them how to get to Huaxi Scenic Area. Easy. It was a Y2 bus ride from just outside the hotel. We let the first bus go as it was packed full and, despite the mad scramble for seats we did manage to sit down on the next bus. After a long ride we got off where most of the locals alighted and found the entrance to Huaxi Park. Only Y6 to get in. We're really off the tourist trail here. The park was very attractive. We spent the afternoon walking ...

Settled in

... One class even gave me a present, the picture of which can be seen in this entry's photo album. Many of our students have invited us to visit their hometown someday. They always say hello when they pass us in the hallway, or around town. So, that's really all for now. We're still having a good time here, and so far everything is going really well. Lots of new pictures in the photo album!
