In the tubing, Vang Vieng

Welcome to the best pub crawl in the entire world, for those of you not in the know, tubing consists of getting a tractor inner tube, driving 4km up river and then spending the next few hours floating down, stopping at one of the 10 or so riverside bars on the way and drinking Cheap beers and Whiskey buckets. We went in the tubing with the two Cool Israelis we met on the bus yesterday and Kyle a mad Texan from the bus as well. We caught up with a few more Aussie boys down stream and spent the...

Vang Vieng, wow!

An early rise today. We were up at 0530 and where going to try and climb the hill in Luang Prabang and watch the sunrise, but it was still overcast! We just got breakfast and a quick ride up to the bus station before settling in for a 7 hour ass numbing bus ride to Vang Vieng. The scenery was beautiful but man the roads were bumpy! Unfortunately the stereotypical Obnoxious 40 year old yank that has been stalking us for the last 3 days was on the bus as well...... Vang vieng was great to arriv...

Quad bikes rock!

Another breakfast at the Family guy bar and another awesome day! After taking a while to wake up we went and managed to rent a Quad bike, this thing was an absolute weapon! Full manual which took a bit to get used to and it was a 250, getting used to driving on the opposite side of the road was also a bit scary ( Yes somehow the police didn't care that Bec and I were hooning around the center of Vang Vieng on a noisy as hell quad bike !?!?!?!?!) We ended up taking it out to some caves for a b...

Time for Tubing!!

Vang Vieng is not much more than three streets and a bus station, the main attractions are the river, beautiful countryside and cave-filled rock formations. It took us just over 3 hours to get us to Vang Vieng - which is good compared to some of the stories we had been told by other travelers who had taken the normal bus. Our first priority (as always) was food and we ate at the nearest place to where the van dropped us off - little did we know then that it would be where we would spend most ...

... drop off his aforementioned friend at her home, despite our repeated protestations. What a dick.

Once we got to Bar I, the sight of numerous fancy dress costumes greeted us, from the more standard: Batman, Spiderman, Superman; to the more ludicrous: a smurf (i.e. whole body covered in blue paint), a bald man wearing a dress, and some completely unidentifiable ensembles that looked like people had just dressed in the dark with great panache. We wasted no time in getting ...

Tubing: Day 1

... some beers. We sat down and looked down the river; next to the bar was a platform set high above the river in some tree branches, which you could climb up via some stairs nearby. There was a rope swing attached to a wire running from the platform, and we watched several people going on it, flying back and forwards over the water a few times before dropping into the water below. Me and Mark were definitely up for a go, and I went first. After climbing the steps ...

... right fold out seats, meaning that every time we went round a right hand bend, our seats tipped up; they also had no headrests, so sleep was impossible. Not an enjoyable experience. We also stopped far more times than were necessary, just because the driver fancied a snack or a wander, e.g. we stopped briefly two hours from Vang Vieng, then only forty-five minutes away we stopped for about twenty minutes. After an excruciating year of chemotherapy, she asked herself what life was all about, locked her door and headed to South East Asia for four months. And we all know why I headed to South East Asia for four months. So what are the chances of the three of us meeting in the same town in the same week??? We spent many quality hours talking, eating and ...
