... number 3 bus to see the monastery. Decided didn’t want to pay the 85 yuan each to go in so had a wander & came across this massive white yak. We paid 10 each & hopped on it – we thought for a ride but it was just for a photo. This wild long haired big Tibetan man looked after it & broke into song for the photo moment.<br><br ...

Baishuitai, Yunnan Province, China blummo... our Eng/Chi dictionary. We really haven't been in a situation where we have had to walk away because we couldn't communicate or were without help. We have also enjoyed meeting some real characters: Mr Chen in his one-man travel agency in Kunming who had lots of tips on Tibet and gave us an insight into the Kunming work ethic. Mr Liu and Mr Lee in Dali, the businessmen that were tickled by and delighted to treat two westerners in a local chinese restuarant as their own ...
Shangri-La, Yunnan, China caraghandben... area's gross domestic product, is a high priority. "We have one national park," Qi said. "We are planning four more over the next 20 years. . . . There is huge space for growth in tourism." Diqing boasts a one-strip airport with daily, one-hour flights to provincial capital Kunming, a budding bulb and flower industry and a handful of Tibetan mastiff breeders. The world's lowest-latitude ski resort opened here a few years ago, and a Singapore developer just ...
Shangri-La, Yunnan, China happysheep... 3 hour walk to the end of the high path we had been following, when we got a chance to go down to the river itself. By now we were the 3 of us, Luke a Japanese/American, Vladimir a Russian, and two Ukrainian girls whose names i forget. The Yangzi river is quite large here but at one point channels through a gorge so narrow legend has it a tiger once escaped pursuit by leaping across, hence the name. It must ...

We were greeted by two Irish guys who apparently run the place. Word on the street was no showers today, but we'd have them tomorrow. They gave us welcome shots of bai(need to find name)- the local rice liquor. We then started drinking beers and hanging out and well, that went on for quite some time. The next morning we ...
Deqin, China stacyb17Surrounded by snow-capped mountains Zhongdian has a dramatic setting and clean fresh air (though not much of it at 3200m). It has the feel of a place that Lonely Planet would refer to as "Backpacker Mecca" only it hasn't quite got round to it yet. Whilst sipping Yunnan coffee in a cafe that frankly, Starbucks would kill to be able to emulate as their "Third Place", we're approached by a Norwegian guy asking us to ...

This path, supposedly cut by the family charging at the top, was absurdedly steep, and at one point presented aas the comedy option of " < dangerous ladder safe path > ". Of course, we had to take the 'dangerous ladder' route. I didn't mind paying the fee for that path, as it must have been quite an undertaking to carv it out. Similarly,I was prepared to pay the same fee for the second route (the Rainbow path ...
Tiger Leaping Gorge, China mrconfused... with mountains on either side - very picturesque. It was also notable because the rain had finally stopped! Thank goodness for that. Shu He is a lovely village but seems to be changing quite rapidly in response to tourism - lots of shops and restaurants, which mostly seem to cater to the Chinese tourists coming here. We had a quick yummy lunch and then headed back to Lijiang. We bought some tickets for the Naxi orchestra for Tuesday night with the help of Eddie, our ...
