... the way either going there or coming back. To hell with walking from Paleohora.

Rested up in Chania for a day and then onto Rethymno. Ankle back to normal. But my troubles haven’t completely gone away. I have developed a rash on my lower back ( Shingles the doctor says as my immune system is way down). Now have some medication ( very expensive) and instructions to rest, eat and stay out of the sun for a week. So much ...

... two restaurants gave us raki that could have been confused for vodka, this time the raki was smooth and almond flavored, perfect for sipping as we gazed out over the harbor hustle and bustle. After dinner we wandered through the streets and alleys within the old city wall. It is a great place to people watch and e architecture is beautiful. A note about restaurants. I realize that I may later want the names of restaurants we have enjoyed to recommend to others so ...

We awoke late this morning still a little tired after our late arrival last night. I was just able to sync yesterday's post. Our hotel is an old Venetian building that has been beautifully renovated. We had the best yogurt I've ever had along with a huge variety of other items for breakfast in the charming courtyard. After breakfast we walked along the waterfront of the old Venetian harbor out to the light house to admire the ...

... lost. It is kept really well.

Chania was the setting off point for me to hike the Samaria gorge. An early morning bus (6am) to the top of the gorge (Omalos) (about 1 hour) and then a long walk downhill through the gorge. The first part was a long zig zag down to the base of the gorge ( from about 1300 meters). Then it was a 15km through the gorge going slightly down hill all the way (the way ...

... Apparently we are either idiots or super human. To compound our insanity, we combined our hike with a drive up a gorge they had recommended as its own sightseeing tour. The drive was incredible with winding switchbacks through olive groves tinkling with the sounds of free range goats. Unexpectedly, small villages would emerge each sporting immaculate churches etched into the hillsides. By 11:30 we had arrived at the start of the hike (1250m elevation) and by 11:45 we were ...
