Head off the next day for Arusha - Tanzania. Was delighted to find out that Irish people do not have to pay for a visa - saving of $50. Once in Arusha I spend about half an hour trying to get a ATM machine to accept my card - the Barclays ATM was broken and they wouldn't accept my visa card as I was not a member - Oh how I wished I had the power of 20 Nick Leesons to bring the *******s down - failing that I proceeded to curse like an unemployed Irish docker suffering from terets. It did the t...
Arusha, Tanzania fragglerock Well it's been a while hasn't it? Cody and I have been stranded on a beautiful beach in zanzibar for 6 days, what a drag ;)
We left our luxurious hotel in Dar es Salaam 10 days ago and caught our ferry to the beautiful island of Zanzibar. When we arrived in stonetown an hour later several men were trying to sell us their taxi and tour guide services. We went with a man who took us to the jambo guest house, it was the guest house I stayed in 6 years ago when I was last in Zanzibar. Cody...
A bit claustrophobic last night with all the heat and I'd had to get out of bed a few times to escape the suffocating feeling. Down on the boat and in the harbour we could see plenty of huge container ships with the small dhows passing close by. Pretty cool to see them next to each other - old verses new. There was a bit of a fracas on the boat as an Aussie guy, quite rightly, told a loud obnoxious Arab looking gentlemen who was using the F and C word profusely and looked like he had one to ...
Stonetown Zanzibar, Tanzania jonclark2000Just a quicken. Zanzibar is awesome!! Spent three days in Stone Town- shopping for some shizzle and generally chilling out. wanted to go do some monkey viewage so went to 'Monkey TOWN' as we named it...bit of a waste of time to be honest, however, fun taking teh dala dala (open backed bus thins) singing to all our fellow passengers for an hour...i'm gonna say they loved it! bit of 'no woman no cry' as per...with a smattering of Katy Perry and 'Sitting on teh Dock'. once you've seen one monkey...
Zanzibar, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania nickybushnellI arrived from Kenya by the Riverside shuttle bus. The formalities at the border were uneventful. I got stamped out by Kenya and had to pay $50 USD to get into Tanzania. I met a Canadian-Indian girl who was with her parents who were originally from Tanzania and another guy from the UK who was going to go diving in Zanzibar. Anyhow, I arrived in Arusha at around 8:30 p.m. I was picked up by Benjamin who was in charge of A-- Expeditions. He took me to the Flamingo Hotel and we planned the next ...
Arusha, Tanzania tototheturtle... his disinterest in me waned, my interest in him had grown the decline of his feelings matching the incline of mine in alacrity. I knew my time in Zanzibar could not end before I had visited his favorite haunt to check out the place it could have all happened in.
It was midnight up on the roof terrace of the Bawani. The place was jumping, packed with people who looked like they lived anyplace but Stone Town, Zanzibar. The water in the kidney shaped pool ...
... over a hundred years ago. They are HUGE and we got to walk right up to them and feed/touch them. The largest one's shell probably went up to almost my waist and was over 100 years old! The island was also a large auction site and trading port in the slave trade. Unfortunately a large part of the buildings have been renovated into a hotel that is now on the island but we did get to see some of the holding cells that still had the metal ring cemented in the floor that the ...
Stone Town, Zanzibar, Tanzania geasson... security check, no beeping wands or screens telling me arrivals and departures. So now I have two hours to kill, sitting at a plastic table next to a runway. I guess I should start going through the 2500 pictures I have taken so far and delete the bad ones. The flight down to Zanzibar was a pleasant one. The little propeller plane flew at 9000 feet, so it was easy to see everything on the ground below. One of the highlights was that I saw a rainbow from ...
Stone Town, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania robthebruce... joy, I rooted mightily for them and felt moved by the national anthem. The tug on my heart was not necessarily a form of nationalism but more so a craving for culture, and home. For a few moments, I felt connected to my homeland and all that is familiar to me. Those moments left me smiling, refreshed and better able to continue travelling with an open heart and mind. The experience also broadened my understanding ...
Stone Town, Zanzibar Archipelago, Tanzania ldambrosio1... kiswahili advantage chatting away to the captain, who after a while we asked if we could sit up on the front of the boat, where your not supposed to go....he accepted, great guns. So with the wind in our hair, the sun setting, the waves splashing over us and a jolly captain to chat away to, me, jessy and steph cruised into stone towns harbour. A grand entrance even if i say so myself. In search for a daladala over the pricey taxi's we ended up walking all over stones towns ...
