Volcan Maderas Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua
It sounded fine in the guide books. 8 hours of hiking up and back on VOlcan Maderas, Ometepe. Ometepe is a volcanic island in Lago de Nicaragua, made up of two connected volcanoes. The scenery was great but believe me we didn't hike, we climbed...upwards for 4 hours. It felt like it was on giant stairs with 2 foot steps. Coming down was no better really especially as the rain started, and yes, it was the tropical thunderstorm type of rain that we all love so much. I donīt know what it is with...
Ometepe, Nicaragua bshortsFinca Magdalena is a coffee plantation (and hostel) about a kilometer up an inactive volcano on an island in the middle of Lake Managua. There are 500 islands in the lake but this is one of the bigger ones, formed out of two volcanoes- one active and one inactive. It was an hour ferry ride, followed by a 2.5 hour bus ride and a 4 km walk to get there, but boy was it worth it! I took a tour of the coffee plantation; I saw how they grow and all of the machinery used to produce the organic coffe...
Ometepe Island, Nicaragua claudiacfavreWritten by Meridyth... Tranquillo (spanish for "tranquil" or "peaceful", in case you couldn't figure it out) is the word I heard most described by every local on La Isla de Ometepe, an island in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, formed by two volcanoes - Concepcion and Madreras. Although considered a tourist's must-see, it remains pretty untouched. To get there, Mark figured out that we needed to take a bus to Rivas, another to San Jorge and then a ferry. But when we got off the bus in Rivas, we ...
Ometepe Island, Nicaragua ej122493As Nicaragua is so small we take the easy option of a shuttle to the ferry for Ometepe. It's just under an hours drive along some potholed roads, something of which we are now accustomed to; in fact it's now exciting to traverse on a smooth road with tarmac. We hadn't really read up much on Ometepe, we'd just heard it was being nominated as one of the new world 7 wonders so thought it would be worth a look. We also hadn't realized that the place we had booked to stay, Finca Magdalena, was an ...
Ometepe Island, Nicaragua gareth.alannaWill make this brief because Iīve got people waiting on me. I climbed Maderas and we are now in Monteverde. Update from home: Okay, the full story of Ometepe. The hike up the volcano was a killer. I guess I'm in pretty bad shape, because it nearly did me in! My calves ached for the next week, and I could barely walk down stairs for a few days. It's an incredibly steep climb, and very muddy and slippery near the top. My shoes, shorts, and shirt were all caked in mud by the end. Oh yeah, and th...
Ometepe Island, Ometepe Island, Nicaragua meezermanSo I get to this island that has two volcanoes on it and I want to climb both of them. The tallest is just shy of 4000 feet and the other is like 3400. I ask around and guides say they cant go to the top because of the poison gas'sīs and would take me to only 1000 feet. I'm thinking bull and also hey I have been seeing too much death stuff so maybe <i shouldnīt push it. The volcano is an active one just emitting a lot of gas fumes. I found a guide willing to take me to the top, he was tak...
Ometepe Island, Nicaragua mikedolan... there were several different species of monkeys about the trees and not nearly enough food. We heard a caretaker brings them stuff to eat everyday so they are not starving to death luckily as the gap to the next island was quite big. Unfortunately our tour guide spoke little English so lots of time spent on understanding our Spanish and making faces. The ride was quite pleasant and not choppy at all across the water, and hour seemed like more than enough to see ...
Nicaragua, Nicaragua karaandkaydian... frustrated group.
But our professor said today could just be a work day for our multi-media project and brochure that we have to do for class. This was a much needed day because my group had made little project up until today.... So overall today was uneventful but successful!
We did take a lunch break and went to El Gato Negro, which is a little organic coffee bar. They serve great little sandwiches and brownies :).
For another ...
... side of one of the volcanoes, but ended up taking the wrong bus and stopped in Altagracia for the night. Odd place, but there were some cool pre-Columbian petroglyphs near the church. Headed over to the Ojo de Agua too, a brilliant little swimming hole in the foliage. After I made my way to Finca Magdalena where, surprise surprise, there were some people I knew (Felicia and Maria from Sweden, hello!). The ...
Ometepe Island, Nicaragua jaynichvolodov... a big dusty square surrounded by scary looking bleachers. The bleachers were about 7ft high with big logs standing on end with planks laid on top and everything nailed together. I donīt really know much about construction, but usually there are crossbeams, some triangle things...these bleachers had nothing.
In the middle of the ring were all (it seemed) the daring young men of the town. And they were all just standing around, many drinking, and some barefoot. A bunch of guys on ...
