Cameron Highlands - Strawberries, Tea and Tourists

A travel blog entry by natandross

Leaving Borneo on yet another Air Asia flight we had a decision to make, we could either head back to Kuala Lumpur for the night before taking an early bus to the Cameron Highlands the following day or try to catch the last bus from the airport to Ipoh, a town much closer to our next destination. With no accommodation booked in KL and having …

After Melaka this has to be next on our list of favourite places in Malaysia. Getting to and from the area by bus is not for the faint hearted with very high, twisty mountain roads and no crash barriers. The bus driver seemed oblivious to passenger comfort and at one stage I thought he had forgotten where the brake pedal was. Our first challenge …

After c.4 hours of the most comfortable bus ride ever (huge reclining seats), we arrived in Tanah Rata where we would be based to explore the Cameron Highlands from. The last hour of the bus ride was already quite impressive, going higher and higher through the lush mountains and starting to catch glimpses of the magnificent tea plantations. We …

Great place to meet people and feel at home

Fathers is very clean and very basic. The staff (especially Jason) were very warm and welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable. Don't expect frills and 5 star - go to a resort for that. If you want a low cost, comfortable stay with like minded travellers then this is the place for you.

Organised but a bit run down

We had less than 24 hours in Cameron Highlands, so the excellent staff made it a lot easier for us to make the most of our time there.

The room itself was clean, spacious and had a great view, but it was a little run down, and having a toilet in the room itself isn't always pleasant.

Fantastic dorm with loads of space, nice and quiet, attentive and friendly staff, and super clean. Restuarant is good and the location is perfect. Nothing but good things to say.

Review of Fathers Guesthouse. Cameron Highlands

We stayed in what is referred to as the new addition to fathers which is a about a 10min walk from the original.
A little overpriced for what is essentially a shared apartment and bathroom albeit nice ones.
The place is way to far from reception making it a pain in arse for any enquiries or to organise the many treks, tours and activities that the place has to offer.
I recomend taking a photo of the billboard so you dont have to go back to refer to anything.
HAve a look at the other places on offer before checking in here unless desperate.

    A Great Place...

Father's is a great Hostel. It's set on a small hill overlooking Tanah Rata village. The dorms are normal standards but the chill out room makes this a great place to relax after a long days treking in the Jungle and mountains. They play movies most nights and the breakfasts are good too. It's a really pretty setting for a lovely guesthouse. And if you've got more of a budget then they have private rooms which we looked on longingly with ensuite shower and facing onto the garden. I'll be going back!

Staff are brilliant. The communal areas are full of travellers willing to share stories. They offers some great tours. Rooms are average but are well equipped for the colder evenings.
