PLANS CHANGED. I GOT A LIE IN. UNTIL HALF 8. TIRED. SO TIRED. So last night I saw that the winds were still forecast to be bad today and so made a last minute decision to switch hiking and abseiling to Thursday. ... are political ex-prisoners who work as guides in the prison which used to be their second home in the past. Our guide was imprisoned for 5 years on Robben Island (1977 – 1982). He was 19 years old when he came to Robben Island. The reason why they sentenced him to 5 years of imprisonment was his participation in the Soweto Uprising in 1976.

... we sat on the bed and talked to a man who is living there, on one single bed with his wife and two kids. I will never forget that. Slowly, over many years on the waiting list they will get relocated to a slightly bigger house. He has been in that room for 19 years....
We saw what many have done in a desperate hope for privacy and that is living in homemade slums. Still 14sqm but it's their own. The problem with this is fire and flooding. No floors, leaky wood or tin ...

... that whites, coloreds and blacks all intermingled until the apartheid government movement where all but whites were forced to leave into informal housing or the shacks on the outskirts of Cape Town. The roads were renamed and houses were demolished. In a slight effort to compensate the government put people in to apartments which were more like cell blocks.
