Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 951-491-9675-

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia sistercrystal... Dar (after all, it was only our second day in Ethiopia and smack in the middle of our period of incessant "foiling"); and (c) we would've been there on a Saturday, the busiest day for the Merkato, which in hindsight would've likely been a little too much for the senses. We spent the next day at the Hilton (the "beacon") - treating ourselves finally to guaranteed hot water and uninterrupted electricity. While Lydia basked in the glory of the Hilton's pool, I tried ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia donna321... ll see it after all... The driver took us to the cashier, which was 5 minutes walk from the museum. We paid for the tickets, and went back to the museum. We were shocked of what we found there; a room, as big as my living room, with some crafts and personal objects that were belong to the emperorm, who ruled Ethiopia more than 40 years. A little disappointed from the museum, we went to see the church nearby. We took some photoes and went back to ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia gsella... peas. There is also a fair bit of other kit, such as a generator, charger, mountain bikes, a gazebo and other stuff, all of which I'm sure will be put to good use or sold off. After a fast food lunch, we set off in a minibus towards Mount Entoto. I must admit that this visit left me feeling apprehensive. Visiting a compound with many seriously ill, desperately poor locals was never going to be a picnic. Stuffing our faces with pizza on the way just seemed to ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia spooky388... too mention the painted eyebrows which gave her a very surprised look... scary, actually! In the morning, Richelle had arranged a circus day for the kids at Gedam Sefer. She hired some tumblers, etc... the kids were really excited and it was nice to say goodbye on such a high note. In the afternoon, we delivered 420 kilos of oranges to the orphange! One of Jari's friends had sent money for the orphanage. The sisters ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia sarabosaw... they had sent over the last few months. Language is a barrier that won't last very long. You can tell he is very intelligent and speaks very well in Amharic, but nothing in English yet - except for "1....2....zudi!" before kicking the soccer ball. It's interesting to see people's reactions to this child. As expected, some people come up to the car to say 'hi' and get his attention. Everyone is happy to hear about the adoption and tell him ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia 2totango... the benefits of tree planting, etc. Check out their excellent website: Cycle Generation. They just spent the past few days in Bale National Park hiking and spotting the elusive Ethiopian wolf. It was nice to see them and catch up. We took them to Adenium Campsite afterwards and introduced them to Jana, the German owner. We thought they might appreciate some of Jana's delicious vegetarian cooking (a ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia bonthorn... HIV child they found lying sick in front of a restaurant. His name, Zahrab. They found a place for him with an HIV mother with a 1 year old child of her own and a number of other HIV children she was voluntarily taking care of. The Yank and I also made a ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia sgaudun... Sick Bay, progress for Can-G0 Afar was slow. A steady view of the mosquito net covering the bed changed very little over the course of 8hrs. Periodic check-ins from the hired security guard despite a severe language barrier were encouraging. 30 January 2008 (Wednesday) All healthy members of the Can-Go Afar reported for early morning duty to concentrate on the water filter. We successfully demoulded 2 more filters and recommissioned the ...
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia cangoafar... The town has but one hotel, so all the onward passengers ran to it. Charles and I managed to secure a room with one small bed, which we had to share not only with each other, but also countless fleas. Thank goodness for sleeping bags! We rounded off the day with a coffee and a Dashen beer (very good) and made the cliched but oh so true comment: 'Only in Africa!'. But of course, it had been another interesting and exciting day, and we wouldn't have missed it! The ...
