ETHIOPIA STILL NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME

... here... or maybe they do. At this moment of minor triumph, for some reason I'm missing Asia, the other point of my vast geographical triangle now looking more rhomboid every day. I've got the itch, so I listen to Dengue Fever and Carabao from my laptop even though I'm in Africa. I need more so I go for the gantreum and maw lam, Jintara and Dao Rung Buriram. Externalize the internal. Ahhh... I wish the ...

Heading Back to Addis . . .

... and already started to plan my next trip there in my head. ("Would it be crazy for me to come back next year?") I would miss the sharp contrasts between the modern and the old; the ubiquitous donkeys; the strikingly beautiful people - both inside and out; amazing spaghetti bolognese, bula fir fir and macchiatos (and I HATE coffee!); countless antiquities and arresting landscapes; the tukols; and, even the rough spots, which provided much hilarity throughout our trip.

The Final Goodbye

... and saviour from above. The church is a fairly wealthy organisation in Ethiopia. This church has a large amount of land adjacent. Beline is trying to negotiate for the people in the compound to be able to use this land for farming. The church is strangely reluctant. Beline believes this is because the church fears it's congregation one day being fit enough to leave the area and hence leave the church. In between heavy showers we wandered around the ...

... home decorations. Stunning! It would be odd to not mention the difficult things one sees on the streets of Addis Ababa. Many people are hungry and the disabilities you see are impossible to fathom. It's hard to know what to do... giving money to kids begging is not solving any problems, especially considering they most likely just hand the birr over to an adult. It's a struggle anywhere in the developing world, but ...

... 40 birr a dish and it was the best curry I think I have ever tasted - and yes I have been to India! We got bus tickets from Wutma Hotel near the plaza for Bahar Dah and were told the journey would be 6 hours when in fact it was about 11 hours! nice! The roads were really bumpy since they were not tarmaced all the way - just for fun. They are currently being tarmaced and bridges being built so I am sure the journey will only be 6 hours in a year or so!

Team Successes

... work. In Awash, we stayed in an old railway hotel, built when the Italians had built the railway. Rumour has it that Emperor Hale Salasi styed in one of our rooms. We hosted the Afar Minister of Health (Regional Bureau Head), the Honourable Awall Wagris, for a pleasant dinner. 1 February 2008 (Friday) The Business Team began the day with an early 6:30am departure from Awash to make it back to Addis for follow-up meetings with UNESCO and ...

... of floats on planks of olivewood. The poverty one we saw on the way was truly shocking - I'm not sure which disease causes it, but I have never in my life seen so many blind people as I've seen in Ethiopia. As word spread that three Europenas were at the church (apparently it has fewer than 15 visitors a week since it is so tough to get to) tens if not scores of people gathered outside to beg. Many were seriously malformed, presumably due to polio, but at least one ...
