We survived the overnight bus of 9 1/2 hours from Nasca to Arequipa. The sliding seats were comfy but the roads are not the best so I always woke up when it got to bumpy and curvaceous.
Arequipa is much more alive and it feels like we are back in civilization. We visited the famous Santa Catalina Convent, which was beautiful, like a small little city in itsself.
The main square are bussing and lots of great restaurant. From our Hotel terrace we can see the El Misti volcano with the sno...
... Colombian mosquitos are not in the least bit put off by DEET. Much to our surprise there was the occasional toilet along the way, even if you did have to watch out for coral snakes and try not to scream like a girl when a "giant" rat runs over your feet whilst you take a sh%t!

So we´re now in Peru, and trying not to get too annoyed by the constant beeping of taxi drivers trying to get your attention, even if you´re out ...
Arequipa, Peru robzilla... hear all night. They tell me the neighborhood pays for a nightguard to watch the homes in the area. The nightguard walks around all night and whistles every few minutes or so to scare off any would-be robbers! How strange! I can hardly sleep with the noise so my earplugs have come in very handy!

Now, I am headed to the plaza de armas - the center of activity for the city of Arequipa- to explore a bit on my own before sunset.

Arequipa, Peru robertvanfuckwt... edge and rises nearly 6000m up into a perfect cone. There are 1 or 2 differences that hit you immediately in crossing from Chile. First, you go from South America´s most developed country to one of it´s least, everything just looks poorer. Houses look as though they will fall down if you blow on them, this is not helped by a crazy law that says you must pay tax on finished buildings, so no one finishes their house! Every single building is left with steel rebar sticking ...
Arequipa, Peru rob78... We left the house are around noon, and started walking down the streets of Cayma heading to Yanahuara's lookout point at the main plaza. The plaza, as you guessed it, has a colonial-looking church on it and a long structure with arches on one side. Looking through the arches, you will get a splendid view of the towering El Misti volcano, and the whole of Areuipa. We spent a few minutes just hanging around and ...
Arequipa, Arequipa, Peru sakuyaini... to get there from Chivay the bus tickets to Cusco had sold out! We booked for the next night and stayed at a place called 'Like Home' (if being locked in then locked out is being like home that is). We got showered and chilled for a bit before attempting to head out for some food at 21.30 (not excessively late) but all the lights in reception were off, there was a bar on the door (which was easily removed) and a padlock on the gate (like a fortress and not ...
Arequipa, Peru claramon... speaking tour guide. Many items - little statues, Incan metals, ceramics and textiles which were found with Juanita - were also exhibited at the museum. The guide also told us more about the Incan practice of human sacrifice. Juanita was made to walk all the way from Cuzco to Arequipa and then up the 5800m high mountain of Ampato dressed in only thin clothes. There, when she was close to dying, she was made to drink a glass of alcohol and then the chief ...
