Valparaíso is SOOOOOOOOO cool. It's walled in on three sides by something like 20 little mountains with a big flat bit in the middle and an active port on the coast. To get up the hills, besides the stairs and really steep streets, there are 14 funicular railways and one 100-year old elevator at the end of a long tunnel that drives deep under the mountain. The architecture is wildly contrasting: some reminiscent of the grand old days before the Panama Canal was built and it was one of the ric...
Valparaiso, Chile cookageMendoza was fantastic and so relaxed so we were a bit sad leaving. But, we were excited to head off to a completely new country and to spend some more time by the ocean - albeit a different one. Mendoza and Valparaiso are technically not that far apart but obviously the epic Andes slap bang in the middle tend to add a few hours to the journey. Even so, we weren´t quite expecting the epic and ridiculous two hour immigration process involving getting on and off the bus, being smelt by terrifyin...

... furniture inside and my favourite, the bar. There was nobody else there so we got to wander around freely. On the way back down into town on a cold and rainy day we checked out some of the open air museum of murals on houses and walls but the unofficial stuff all round the city was much better. Valparaiso would be appreciated much more in the sun but we weren`t that lucky, clouds cover the coast of Chile this time of year it seems. A good couple of days though.
Valparaiso, Chile warty007Valparaiso is an interesting city that has received the UNESCO world heritage label and for a reason. Splendid hill views with funky colored houses and old stylish ascendors from its heyday back in the early 20th century make this a must-see place if you have time to burn in Chile.
Valparaiso, Chile markusrohner... as strong as Yoko's vodka orange which was over 50% vodka! Today I woke up in time for a massive free breakfast at the hostel - bun with cheese, bun with egg, bun with jam and orange juice. Unfortunately after eating all the breakfast I started feeling really sick. Instead of heading out to look around the city I crashed back in bed for another few hours. Once I managed to get out ...
Valparaiso, Chile danasv... couldn't document them all...but this was appropriate... A nice vantage point... rj rita We could have taken 100 of these pictures....every single dog was totally chill in this town. A good indication that life is good in Valparaiso. Unlike Limans, Valparaisians do not bolt down their name plates ...
Valparaiso, Chile rnrblog... where he hd recommended a supposedly great seafood restaurant. Found it and there standing outside hawking for passerbyers to enter for lunch was a fantastic looking old guy with curly black dyed hair and wearing a white suit and shoes - looking just like a gangster out of a 40's movie! hee While we were eating the "mobster guy" came in and tuned on the kareoke machine and proceeed to sing at each table. Of course he sang me and ...
Valparaiso, Chile themurphys... at the very end of town.
This photo is a bit like a microcosm of Valparaiso, with an elevator, some hills and lots of brightly coloured houses...
We decided to take a train to Vina del Mar, a smaller coastal town about 10 kms away which is well known for its beaches and laid-back 'resort' vibe ...
