... the factory to her own home, now known as Val Kill cottage.

Eleanor was born at 56 West 37th Street in Manhattan on 11 October 1884.

After FDR died [1945], the cottage became her permanent home, where she could do as she liked, entertain friends, swim in the pool, and generally chill out. Fala, FDR's black Scottish Terrier came to live with Eleanor at Val Kill. He was always alert for the return of his master, who of ...

The lovely gay friendly hotel that we stayed at last time hasn't changed very much since. They still serve a variety of world-class New York bagels, some kind of clotted cream and sugar overpowering cereals. The first morning of our first full day we were greeted almost immediately after leaving our hostel by Tony - an elderly, short, female New Yorker who somehow identified us as tourists straight away (I think the take away coffee and dunkin donuts for breakfast we had in our hands along with looking puzzled at a pocket map of NY gave it a way slightly). She educated us on the nearest subway and on Central ...

... It has some of the original escalators and this is something that people actually like. For me, it just seems too much like stepping back in time! I don't enjoy the shopping or the crowds. Turns out that this may have been a bad idea. I had wanted to go to 230 on 5th which is a rooftop cocktail bar, but the thought of going back to the apartment to shower and change, then schlepping back into Midtown is not an appealing one. We decide instead to go back, rest up a bit, then have ...
