... to guide them into the west channel. The lighthouse opened in 1863 and housed up to three families. There was one piece of furniture inside that was an original piece, one that was there when the lighthouse opened. It was a clock - a necessity for flashing the light at the exact time it was supposed to in order to identify the island. I also learned that light houses may look similar to others nearby, but one may have stripes or some other design which is used ...

That's exactly what we did. It was a beautiful sunny day, but it was a little chilly. We drove around the entire island and checked out the sights. There are plenty of houses on the island and each entry way looks like a path to a hiking trail. It gets kind of confusing when you're looking for a good spot to venture off into the woods! ... part of the day was when we were, according to the GPS, about an hour from Marquette MI. Suzy notices that the time on the GPS and the car clock are not making any since. We only had about 20 miles to go, according to the GPS, yet the difference between the two clocks was about an hour and a half. She discovered that we had changed into another time zone and had gained another hour. She told me she was so happy ...

... Islands are now forested with no inhabitants except for 1, but come with a rich history of survivalists who tried to live thru the grueling 4-5 winter months. Several islands have sandy beaches at 250-500' high where the water level once was millions of years ago. The colorful caves make us wonder about their past. Town of Bayfield reminds us of Port Townsend, quirky shops and eateries on the water's ...
