... back to the hostel, we planned on calling to the hagendaz ice cream cafe for a treat until we saw the prices!! A few scoops cost more than what a tub cost at home so we went for a Mc Donald's ice cream instead lol. In the evening we went out & had the famous Beijing duck & a few beers. It was lovely! Cheaper than back home too for a full duck. We then went back to the hostel & sat in the living room with a beer, great first day in china!!! ...

When the train is ready the gates are opened and people flood through like there life depended on it even though everyone has an allocated bed so theres really no need to rush. Compared to most trains we have travelled on in China which were pretty run down and smelly the Beijing to Shanghai train was luxury. It was clean with tiny TV’s (Chinese TV’s) white clean beds, a clean toilet and the ‘No Smoking’ rule was actually enforced.

Sophie's parents liked the duck-chopstick settings; Toby worked his white-guy magic and got them a free wrapped set for souvenirs.
