J-TIME!

Jodphur, the second of the three main cities in Rajhastan beginning with the letter 'J' is out of this world! We eventually arrived here in the dead of night after hours and hours of waiting and travels between Jaipur and here and automatically loved it. It's quirky culture, blue buildings and monkeys are excellent and our accomodation at the 'Cosy' Guesthouse does exactly what it says on the tin! This city is so much more than expected and up there with Junagadh in my faves so far... Saying ...

The killer bus journey

Had breakfast on our hotels roof top restaurant again (keep with me...this is going somwhere). Because its so quiet they only have a few things on the menu - including porridge (They all have that!). It reminds me of when I was a kid with me Flahvans and my Dad would run in the morning just like the ad! Anyway back to the point. People here have a tendancy not to wash their hands properly (or at all!) having huge dirty fingernails and you always have to worry when they are handing you the foo...

Jodhpur

After a murderous train ride from Varanasi we arrive in Jodhpur at 4.30 am on the 1st of Jan. The train was three hours late and ran slow taking a grueling 31 hours to reach its destination. It is made more uncomfortable for me as I seem to have picked up the dreaded Delhi belly - and I'm always boasting about my cast iron stomach! Amazingly, when we arrive the promised pick-up is waiting to guide us to the guesthouse. On arrival we find the owner a little worse for wear due to his "little pa...

Happy New Year from Jodhpur! I'm now getting used to being out of my homeground of Gujerat and have fallen in love with Rajasthan, especially Jodhpur. We spent NYE on the rooftop of our guest house watching fireworks, which was very cool. It was amusing, as we heard a group of boys on the rooftop opposite shout in celebration of the New Year about 20 mins after midnight; indian timing eh! We arrived in Jodhpur after a 6 hours train delay from Jaipur so were very very tired when we arrived. Th...

Even Jodhpur Has the Blues

Max: Oh my guts! Bombay Belly, Delhi Belly; whatever you want to call it, I got it. I'm starting a script of antibiotics as we leave for Pushkar. The wedding in Novi was a truly wonderful experience, but drinking the local water has had its toll. I won't dwell on it, I'll just try and recount our stories between sprints to the loo where Em will take over. We came into Jodhpur at about 9:30 after being put on a bus in Sumerpur by Pooja and her grandfather. We hopped in a rickshaw to take us to...

Time to be blue

Leaving Jaipur was a happy day indeed. I decided to splurge and take an a/c train because the heat is just too much.
The train was late and we hung around. I lit a cigarette when a cop came up to me and told me I couldn't smoke there. Barbara was just about to light her cigarette and he takes it out of her hand and says "no smoke, there is fine, ees 20...uhh 200 rupees! ...each! 400 rupees!" It's ridiculous because everyone smokes in the stations, there aren't any signs posted but I wasn'...

It ain't called the blue city for nothin'

As we are wont to do, we arrived in Jodhpur at 4 in the morning. It's never fun to arrive in a new city this early, but I suppose it has some advantages. Usually the autorickshaw drivers will take us where we want to go (not to a commission-paying hotel), and just overcharge us a little. We ended up picking the Cosy Guesthouse. This involved a five minute walk up narrow twisting lanes to the front door. The rickshaw driver started unceremoniously banging on the metal grate, and in a couple mi...

... also (I guess Maria is not the only one with medical problems here). I push my way in and get service as fast as I can. The man looks at the long list, much longer than all the others, "sir, it will be 30 minutes-I come to your room"-"No sir, I will wait here"--"I sorry, will take longer, you go to room". Actually this did happen in a similar fashion last night so I trusted him. 30 minutes later I was back down there and it was nearly filled--with ...

... sand-dunes and leapt off the top of them into knee-deep silky-soft sand. We saw vultures and dung-beetles, actually rolling dung! All very 'Planet Earth'. Unfortunately, we also saw a small white scorpion scuttling about next to our beds; the camel-driver assured us that it was not poisonous but he certainly shooed everyone away very quickly and then obliterated it with his flip-flop, which are not the actions of a man who knows the scopion to be non ...

note to self: bring towel and no boys

... email and phone number -"um, why???", guy from fort asks if I need friend -"no, thanks", guy from palace asks if I will have party time -"hahahaha...NO!" -it is truly the weirdest thing -Indians really like taking pictures of and with foreigners (an entire family just sat down beside me and had me pose with them for pictures - cute but awkward when you know they are zooming in on your face; better than the walk-by-and-secretly-snap-a-pic-with-ce ...
