Tales of the unexpected

On the way back we got a call from a dog owner whose dog had whelped 6 puppies but still had more to come and had stopped (the last one was 4 hours before). So, bedraggled, we headed back into the surgery and did the caesarian section from hell. There were another 5 dead ...

After this was done, we quickly vaccinated the two dogs and headed off to see the sick calf. On arrival the farmer in question directed us to the calf and proceeded to tell us what was wrong. The calf had a really old mother who hadn't been able to provide enough milk so was weaned really early and bottle fed but ...
In the thick of the action...
... we were to treat the rest of the calves in the group (100 in total) with a vaccine and some preventative antibiotics just in case the pneumonia were to spread to the rest of the calves. This took up the rest of the afternoon, we were supposed to go to assist in a calving but by the time we were finished the cow had managed on her own!
