Antelopes, Baboons and Penguins, Oh My!

... came across a herd of antelope, the Bontebok, and several wandering ostriches. I know it's not much relative to the diversity of southern Africa, but it was still nice to see animals that are vastly different from animals I'm accustomed to seeing.
Finally the clouds cleared and Table Mountain was visible from all sections of the city. I took the cable car to the top and hiked around all day. The views from the top are ...

... to a runny nose, to the real flu. At times they don't understand the severity of their conditions (such as those with extremely high fevers or who are probably living with TB), and at other times they don't have much wrong but are coming anyway because they are helpless on their own.

Every days a school day

... and we stayed up talking. Firstly explaining our first impressions of each other, then we ended up having very deep conversations about the world and other very philosophical ideas. We discussed 'what makes me happy' and ultimately 'why are we here'. It was a lovely night. I really enjoyed bonding with them better and it was nice knowing that there were two other people who liked talking deep about things like me. We forced ourselves to stop talking at 3 am, as we all had ...

let's talk about the weather

... over the Marin Headlands that i stopped dead in my tracks and really questioned where i was. i had heard that Cape Town was likened to San Francisco by many people but this was uncanny. everyone told me that i should expect wind in Cape Town but they didn't tell me how much wind to expect. to call it windy is an understatement. let's say that it's blustery most days and it gets more intense in the afternoon ...

E' primavera...

Ian, penguins, and Robbin Island

... scans the waters, looking for signs of shark. A signal can be sent to the beach below, to pull out all the surfers. I asked Barry, who surfs here, how frequently this happens and was told, “In season, it can happen quite a lot.” Not a real answer but it tells me the Shark Spotter is not superfluous.

Our next stop was to fetch Ian from Peter’s house. Peter has a great log cabin-like home, overlooking the beach and what used to be wetlands but is now mostly condos ...

Cape Town

We left from Walvis Bay on a very crowded plane as the Johannesburg plane had been cancelled. When we got to Cape Town it was already evening, but we picked up our hired car, and tootled off to Sea Point. The owner of our apartment, Leon, was there to meet us and show us all the ropes. It is a lovely apartment, and has everything you can imagine you need in it. Monday morning was good ...

Short but Sweet re-visit

... rather hungry by the time this was all over, but the bus didn't stop again for another 5 hours for a meal break! The scenery was quite spectacular after we had crossed into South Africa, with irrigated terraced slopes growing all manner of crops. At last we spotted Table mountain in the distance and were looking forward to the end of our last long bus journey. Our time in Cape Town was to be less than 24 hours but we had 2 things we had wanted to do which we ...

forgetting the obvious

... located, all while trying to make it before 6am, not always guaranteed. This is a common thing for most of the people around here. They all live on the outskirts of Cape Town, which if you just start to drive a bit out of the city the sides of the roads are clustered with townships which consist of shacks made out of steel or any sort of metal or wood found. The electricity lines are all streaming down to the multitudes of shacks looking like spider webs. He was very ...

Best day of my life (Tip: Took 8 pages in Word)

... I loved how he searched for Katie and I in the crowd and when he found us he just beamed, and watched us watch him. He really was like a child telling his parents to watch the cool thing he could do. I loved it, and I loved these kids. After both of the group's performances, we had five minutes to take final pictures and say goodbye. I had to try so hard not to cry, but Katie and I have Neo's address so we can keep in touch with him. He wanted our phone numbers ...
