Things that go BUMP in the Night...

... swift action resulted in them being relocated underneath the van, despite the protestations of Lymºs board, which proceeded to lash out and cause him bodily harm about the head. (A: ha ha ha !!) However, all is forgiven and we all lived to surf another day.

Cradle of the Spanish Reconquest

... Jews, the Inquisitioin, etc. Hee, hee. Still trying to be funny here. But enough.

It is a beautiful spot here. The air is cool and smells of the woods. We've both commented how early it feels here in the mornings. By that I mean that at 8am it feels dark and early--like 6am back home. Not much moves until 9am (which feels like 7)! Enjoy the photos from Covadonga. Next stop, Ribadeo on the coast.

La Playa Franca - Where the Mountains Meet the Sea

Left Hector's at 10 am. I was very tired. We hit the road right after getting bread and fruit for breakfast. We ate breakfast and I decided to get some shut-eye after downloading all of the pictures from the day before. Conrad said he would wake me if he saw anything cool. I thought I was just about falling asleep when he woke me up for a "scenic detour". Wow, was all I could ...

Nationacal Parqu Picos de Europa

... the mountains following the river Cares. Although it is only possible to see the river occasional due to it being too far below the path it is possible to hear it. The walk is about 24 kilometers there and back. Approx 16 miles. We have never been on such a spectacular walk. The path clings to the cliff face hundreds of meters above the gorge and burrows through solid rock. It is very difficult to describe adequately.

Tomorrow 2 10 09 we move on.

Is every town in Spain lovely?

We awoke to the sounds the ocean across the street. A stroll revealled the Picos de Europe directly behind us. We toured the lovely old city, took some naps, played in another discovered playground, and set off again around ...

Costa Verde

We meet Julia and Geoffrey at Asturias Airport but have a little more difficulty finding our Hertz rental car. It was worth searching as it turns out to be a brand new BMW. We climb in gingerly as its just begun to rain because it seems a crime to put our feet on the brand new cream carpet.

The rain or at least, cloud, stays with us for the whole week which means few chances at even seeing the mountains let along walking in them. A few ...

Off the beaten track

Today we departed La Sopelana and headed for Los Picos de Europa via Bilbao.  We left by 10, but the guy in reception wasn't around so we waited for a while.  We also realized the tent came apart at one of the seams so we took a detour by a strip mall into an outdoors store.  They didn't have the glue we needed, but they did have a pop-up tent for a really good price so we got that instead.  We now have three tents for this trip.  The reason we couldn't just "rough it ...

Final Excursion to Asturias

... beach, and eventually grabbed some pizza for take out. This place, Asturias, just made it seem like we were not in Spain. Rather, we felt like we were in some other land filled with an immense amount of vegetation and beauty. That night was low key; a couple beers and little wine and no major activities. The next day was practically pointless. We went to a place called Altamira that is home to ancient caves from 16,500 years ago where significant cave drawings were discovered ...

The end of the road

... On one side is a promenade along the riverbank with signs describing the local history, from Stone Age to modern times, followed by signs with all the local mythical creatures. Both were bilingual, Castilian Spanish and the local language, Bable, yet another version of Spanish. On the other side of the river is a lovely beach, with a seafront promenade backed by grand residences. Again there were signs indicating the ...

Spain Day 16 - Fuente De and Comillas

... is had by all. Back in the car, we head back home for a relaxing evening, then some work for me, then sleepytime. Fuente De was definitely an amazing experience. Glad we went. The only thing we didn't do on this road trip was to visit the area's cities known for their blue cheese, Liebana. The local tourism office informs us that they will be holding the 5th annual cheese festival this Saturday. If we don't find something more appealing, we may be back for some free cheese samples and festivities.
