Knights Templar

It was constructed by them in the 12th century and was their headquarters for 2 centuries before they were dissolved and it became headquarters of the Order of Christ. It is on the very top of the hill in Tomar and is visible throughout the town.

The building itself is huge and seems to go on forever. There are rooms and chapels everywhere and although most are very bare and ...

Fatima - a holy place

Fatima - where the lady of Fatima appeared to 3 children! It was an amazing place because of the story happened in early 20th century. It sounds so real.. so I did some research on it after I returned to the US.

So it was back in 1917 - May 13. The first apparition. That year every 13th the lady appeared to the three children. In October 13, 70K people appeared in front of the Olive Tree and ...

... equal measure) or the landing outside our room.

Once we'd settled in (thrown the rucksacks on the bed) we made it our business to seek out the sights. Virg was chomping at the bit to see the convent (she has a thing about convents), but as it was 35 degrees and up a bloody big hill we agreed that we'd wait to go up first thing one morning to make the most of the cool(er) bit of the day. That left a few cafes and cake ...

... station in the city center where we had to catch another train for Fatima. During the train journey, my friend who had a DK eye -witness guide book in her hand suggested that we change our destination to Tomar , a s mall town with a castle up in the hill. From the picture in the book it looks interesting. Another veteran traveller in the group talked to a passenger ...

Tomar and the Knight's Templar

... headed to the town hall. They didn't start the show until 9pm, but all the local families were excited. The play was called 'Pirate in Love'. Though entirely in Portuguese, we did pick up a few words, like Yes, No, But, Or and Hello. Apart from those words, we relied totally on the visual cues. The play was a mishmash of, you guessed it, Disney stories. Which of course meant I enjoyed the night listening to ...

... have got away on them a bit and, when completed in 1730, accommodated 450 monks and novices. A royal wing was incorporated as well as a basilica. By then they were spending their ill-gotten gains from the New World - when the Flemish bellmakers squeaked, "How many?? Um ... that'd probably better be cash in advance", Dom João doubled his order to 100 bells. The palace is now occupied by the military (who have probably redecorated in olive drab) but there's still plenty ...

The charola was interesting, very dark, statues and art - described by lonely planet as a star wars set, that took imagination but it was still pretty cool.
