Laundry day! Yay!! Our landlady, Ramona, got the joyous task of cleaning lashings of smelly clothes for the group. Meanwhile, we set off to Vadu Izei town to take out some Romanian Lei, change our Hungarian Florins into Lei, or RON's as the EU called them, and to try to send some souvenirs home. We're not souvenir people per se, but we have managed to find a few items for friends plus we have a lot of winter stuff we brought with us but haven't had a chance to use as we have ...

After the day of travel we arrived in the back blocks of Romania at 10pm. We had a little bit of a delay at the border between Hungary and Romania, but we had our supplies on hand and were well prepared for the journey. The general area was in Maramures County, but the actual town in which we stayed was Vadu Izei, one of those back country little Romanian Eastern European towns in the middle of nowhere. This was a home stay place, ...

Long traveling day today. Started at 8am this morning with a 2 hr bus ride to Debrecen - another Hungarian city. Had 3 hours to wander around - not that we felt like wandering too much in the 40 degree heat. Found a quirky little alleyway to have lunch in - they only had one item on the menu - pork cutlet with potatoes and tomato soup, but it was yum. Them of course, we had to get icecream :) Left around 3pm ...

... and we sat in the front seat with a good view of the countryside, including lots of fields of sunflowers.

Crossing of border between Romania and Serbia was uneventful, and we were soon in Belgrade.

SUMMARY OF OUR THOUGHTS ON ROMANIA

Most people we know have a negative view of Romania, mainly due to publicity about its despotic leader Nicolae Ceaușescu (who was executed in 1989), or stories they saw about the orphanages around that time, ...

... in my room! Thank goodness the door was locked. I have never run across this kind of over protectiveness. Many people I met, however, were shocked that I was alone. One girl, in the grocery store, shook her head sadly and said "This is not good for you to travel alone. You need someone to take care of you!". She asked me what about a husband. By this point, my patience was at an end and I said "I threw him away"....

I went to bed feeling VERY ASSERTIVE! ...
