Laundry day! Yay!! Our landlady, Ramona, got the joyous task of cleaning lashings of smelly clothes for the group. Meanwhile, we set off to Vadu Izei town to take out some Romanian Lei, change our Hungarian Florins into Lei, or RON's as the EU called them, and to try to send some souvenirs home. We're not souvenir people per se, but we have managed to find a few items for friends plus we have a lot of winter stuff we brought with us but haven't had a chance to use as we have ...

After the day of travel we arrived in the back blocks of Romania at 10pm. We had a little bit of a delay at the border between Hungary and Romania, but we had our supplies on hand and were well prepared for the journey. The general area was in Maramures County, but the actual town in which we stayed was Vadu Izei, one of those back country little Romanian Eastern European towns in the middle of nowhere. This was a home stay place, ...

Long traveling day today. Started at 8am this morning with a 2 hr bus ride to Debrecen - another Hungarian city. Found a quirky little alleyway to have lunch in - they only had one item on the menu - pork cutlet with potatoes and tomato soup, but it was yum. Them of course, we had to get icecream :) Left around 3pm ...

... She was able to point to where we were on the map. I learned my second valuable lesson in Romania. Some gestures are universal. I touched my hand to my heart and smiled. She touched her hand to her heart and smiled back. I will never forget that moment.

I found my way back and had a quiet evening. I was utterly exhausted from language, cultural and history overload, but I was so glad I made the effort to come to Northern ...

... After we had said farewell he took me over to a spot on the grass next to the petrol station fore court. "chi?" he said "kaffee?" signalling drinking. I said "chi, thanks" and he scurried off. I could see them both watching from time to time to check the progress of my tent erection, but when i looked they would pretend to be working or having a conversation. Not long after i had finished I heard footsteps and the owner appeared with a cup of tea and a pastry. He had a peak ...
