Amsterdam....Amsterdam was one of those cities I don't think I will ever forget. It was always somewhere I wanted to visit, not because I knew a lot about it other than Anne Frank's house and it's "red light" district, but because my advisor, mentor and professor is from the Netherlands and always talked about Amsterdam and it's culture. Well boy was I in for a surprise. Not only was it breathtakingly beautiful, it was also a mix of young wild life, ...

Christmas Morning for Happy Little TopDeckers!

... it legally everywhere. It's bizarre because it is so very different to home. Naturally, our walking tour also took us to and through the red light district. It was exactly as you'd imagine it, with streets lined with windows and fluorescent red lights with women posing and dancing and generally trying to attract the eyes of a willing bloke. Lots of open curtains, lots of closed curtains. Despite the dinginess, it is statistically a very safe city and feels like it too. The ...

It is not fun, but also in Germany we mostly stick to the highways, fearing the racing Germans when going uphill with only 40km/hr! Even truck drivers keep overtaking us. Will we make it to ...

... The stairs though! It is exactly like climbing up a ladder the stairs here. They are that narrow and step. Except I did it carrying my bags and lifting my pack. Quite scary. We made it though and then we just wanted a walk. We were told that marijuana smoking, along with tobacco, is only permitted on those lethal steps, and sure enough, as we walked out we passed a hazy grey smoke curtain and several enthusiastic stoners. Not something ...

... but I am now self-policing and getting home earlier…and with Sam. I was refreshed and not exhausted when we arrived in Amsterdam!

The casino has been particularly fun for Sam, despite the sparse interest in poker playing among other passengers. He was invited to play with the senior officers of the cruise, and the honeymooning guy (a professional poker player from Vegas). He won that tournament, and a free dinner for two at one of the ...
