Days 8-11!

... gave the whole training. I was able, with my limited Spanish ability, to present the food groups and the advantages of each category to 19 women from the community. I also touched on the concept of a colorful plate, and guided the activity where they passed around a basket, picked a picture of a food, and placed it in the right spot on the pyramid. It went well! Right after this,Caitlin also discussed the importance of handwashing before and after ...

Beeping Cajeros

... approaching the city. It blows my mind that people can and do survive on a daily basis like this all the while our leeches back home whine about not getting this or that from the government.

The Centro Historico is something else as well. I had been here once before a few years back and couldnīt believe my eyes and never quite got into the place. Fast forward to now and itīs thankfully a different experience for me.

Playa El Majahual - Chilling out at the beach

... your hands. Christina quickly tells the two men that we would like to stay the night, have access to the washrooms, and use the beach. So it turns out the property that we thought was a backyard, or mechanics/restaurant/garbage dump was actually a ‘resort’. The price was good though, $5 US! We quickly unpacked and got ready for the beach.

Again, we encountered a new way of going to the beach. We noticed that ...

The first night I was here we played hide and go seek, but of course a more exciting Salvadoran version which can turn a little violent if you end up being the last person to get to the designated safe point! Let me tell you! There are a lot of new faces this year, well, not ...

... houses. The trip was up an inactive volcano Guazapa and was excellent but harrowing. The mood was lightened entirely by my horse Pichel though. Even though it was my first time on a horse I was very comfortable and tried to get it to go fast as soon as I got on it. It wasnīt up for it though and trudged along miles behind Lucy and our guide from the off, stopping every few yards to eat mangoes or take a dump. It refused ...

Three Countries in One Day

... might want to go next. I had thought about going to an area mostly known for its role in the war but decided I really didn't need to get another lesson in our brutality to each other. I certainly didn't want to stay in seedy San Miguel so hopped on the first bus to San Salvador. My first impression of the country is that it is definitely wealthier than Nicaragua ( not hard to do as that country is second only to Haiti in ...

Suchitoto is the center of art and culture in El Salvador and the town is fill with works by local and international artists. Even in the smallest restaurants, like my own you will find paintings, photographs, sculptures and more as decorations and for sale. For more information about Suchitoto and to see what ...

El Salvador! (Part 2)

... implying some sort of sexual innuendo which, considering the opposite extremes in age of the females present, would just be wrong. If no one else had detected this possible innuendo then I must just have a sick mind... either way letīs move on*) The next stop was the house of Carlos himself, where I got to meet his wife and two little kids. Their home was a very humble affair - one room with two hammocks that acted as a living room and bedroom for Carlos, and another room with a bed ...
