Before I get to Havana, I want to show you how different publicity is in Cuba. There are no outdoor billboards advertising Coca Cola or Havana Club rum along the highways. In their place are signs advertising the glories of the revolution. It is as if the only signs you see on U.S. highways are praise for Barack Obama.

On our first journey outside Havana, we headed east to Varadero to see what are proclaimed to be some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Along the way, we planned to visit Matanzas and the caves of Bella Mar. Since we'd be going through farmlands, we planned to explore filling a special order from my Tia Carmen in Miami, to get aceite de majŠ. Apparently, this oil has healing powers for arthritis and other neurological ailments.

... for our neighbour who smokes them regularly, so I said yes. He advised that he had a relative who worked at the factory and asked us to come to his "family" home and we agreed.
