... and carriage. There's a statue to two of the towns heros from former times (resisted French oppression) in a square nearly devoid of pigeons. The pair of peregrine falcons nesting in the nearby tower of the Church of Our Lady might have something to do with this!

We dine at the restaurant below on the square and then walk away from the square to a nearby plaza where hoards of young Dutch supporters are congregating along with the Belgians hoping for one win for the evening. (Seeing the aftermath of the Labor Day Eve festivities in Ghent made us relieved that we had gone back to our hostel around 10:30 p.m. after the beer tour the night before.)

Mostly, though, we stuck to the touristy areas. We started ...

      About Christmas Markets

My excuse for this trip was to photograph the Christmas Markets of Belgium. As far as I can tell, just about every major town in these parts has a Christmas Market. These are collections of wooden stalls that sell food, Christmas ornaments, winter clothes and such. They are located in town centers, so the backdrop for these glorified flea markets is some of the best architecture in Europe. They are lit with Christmas ...
