Shangri-La, Yunnan, China blummo... is beautiful and our room, although simple, had a window that gave us a great view of the mountains. They even had the self-proclaimed "Number 1 Toilet in the World" because as you used the toilet you had a great view of the mountains, as well. I would come to know and love this bathroom really well later on in the night...

For dinner we were told to order the free range chicken because it was supposed to be really good. The ...
Shangri-La, Yunnan, China lexicomp... exclusively because of her ability to make everyone feel welcome and the fact that she makes sure everyone leaves with a smile on their face. There was a degree of trepidation regarding Zhongdian, mainly due to the reports of freezing weather. Chun, my Korean friend, had told stories of dorm rooms that were colder than the outside, and seeing his wind and cold cracked face it was easy to believe him. As our bus headed higher and ...
Zhongdian, Yunnan, China lnb203... a time limit. This is an altered vision of time-and one that is supremely seductive: the fact that time moves slowly there, without physical decay. You say you've spent over 20 years exploring the Himalayan region where Hilton set his book. What has been the allure of the place for you? Speaking about the passage of time, 20 years is a long time! I live in BC, Canada. We have great coastal mountains here with great snow. But when you go to the Himalayas, the ...
Shangri-La, Yunnan, China happysheep... techno beat. It was similar to the Naxi dancing we saw in Tibet, with people moving in a circular motion, but the steps were different. The interesting thing about it was how well the local people knew the dance steps. Every time a new song came out, everyone knew exactly which dance to launch into, and they did it perfectly in synch. The community atmosphere was a big part of the experience and helped to make Shangri-la a very ...
Zhongdian, China schwate... started our stair climb. About half way up Carol couldn't continue so our guide returned to the foot of the stairs with her and got her stabilized and drinking a sweet cocoa coffee. She urged me to continue and with a little reluctance did. I had to make frequent stops and the oxygen was a big help. The Chinese people were/are a very warm and friendly people and greeted me (after a short stare). I frequently was asked to stand with one of their party to pose for ...
Zhongdian, China wephenn... wouldnt let us through unless we paid 10 yuan each to continue.. There was a bit of argy bargy and some words exchanged until be bargined on 5 yuan each instead; he didnt like it but we just handed him the money and pushed past him.. The next part of the decent was straight down the sheer cliff face on a metal ladder!! Great fun. :) Once we were at the bottom there was another man waiting just sat by the Yangtzi doing nothing. We though we would have to pay again but we were ...
Qiaotou, China sneekybeeky... been driven by electricity, but we were surprised when we saw some chinese tourists and some locals rotating the prayer wheel by hand! After this we headed for a smaller local monastery back down the hill. There was much less to see here, but it was still quite nice. Glenn attemped to chat to the monks in order to get a photo, but even though the converstation was going ok, they weren't keen to be photographed. Back at Kevin's, we discussed our desire to head towards Deqin to see ...
