Kanchanaburi and Erawan Falls!

Hello Everyone! We are wrapping up our last night in Kanchanaburi, but it's been a while since our last entry.. so here's the update! We took the train from Thonburi Station (Bangkok Noi) to Kanchanaburi (Kan as the locals say). The ride was only 3 hours long and we were well taken care of. The woman across from us always offered us food if she was eating.. however as we declined her offer, she politely declined our offer of mini bananas. When Andrew offered her bananas, she seemed to think h...

Treehouses and Tigers

It's unlikely that Thonburi station in Bangkok will ever be called a "Destination Station" like the new St Pancras but we were pleased to find the signs in both English and Thai and it was easy enough to buy our (heavily inflated) tourist tickets to Kanchanaburi. We eschewed the tourist mini-bus or taxi as we settled into 3 hours of 3rd class travel. Surely a first. The seats were clean enough (looking) but lacked any sort of comfy cushion and the seat backs were at 90 degrees so by the time ...

Bridge Over Trouble Water

Well part two of my little tour and things get a bit more exciting now!

I got a taxi from my Guest House in Bangkok to the South Bus Terminal, which really is in the **** end of no where, but is a lot better than Terminal 4 at Heathrow. In fact it's a lot better than a few airports I've been to! From there it is a massive 2pound (Not got the pound symbol on keyboards out here!) for a bus from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi. Upon arrival I decided to try my luck and walk to the area where the ...

Bridge over the River Kwai and Elephants

We arrived in Kanchanaburi on Tuesday 29th April. Kanchanaburi is a tourist hotspot 2 hours train journey north west of Bangkok. The train journey itself was an experience, a really old fashioned train with open windows and doors instrad of aircon and riekety flooring. There were locals jumping on and off at random places, many getting on to try to sell their goods/ food/ drinks. Despite being far from the luxurious traiuns we have in UK we arrived safe and arrived we booked ourselves into a ...

Hell Fire Pass + Hot Springs tour

Yet again we've had another brilliant day. We booked ourselves onto a tour today which took us to several attractions. First stop was a small waterfall, pretty but nothing compared to E falls we went to om Wed. We then went to 'Hell Fire Pass', a part of the Death Railway between the now Thailand and Burma, which prisoners of war were forced to build in horrific conditions in WW2 for the Japanese to transport supplies to their troops. To build Hell Fire Pass section of the railway POW's had t...

Thailand by Laura Waiting for our plane to Bangkok at Sydney airport, we sat listening to an Irish couple fight bitterly. She sobbed and rocked a toddler on her knee and he kept telling her it was over. Daniel and I resolved to make a sense of wonder, respect, and support for each other an anchor in all the shifting craziness to come. We were feeling strangely subdued, (but excited and hopeful) about finally being on the road - this much anticipated event that had somehow morphed from somethi...

Kanchanaburi

Arrived today on the bus from Bangkok. Booked into the Blue Star Guest house on the river. Then went about quickly organising a tour for the next day before walking down to the memorial ground to see the graves of all the service men who died building the Burma Railway. V. sad but v.beautiful and a must if you are in the area (having said that everything in the area is a must really!). 22nd Went to the Erawan National park to see the Erawan 7 tier waterful. the 1050m climb is well worth it, a...

Frustration

4 days on, many extremely frustrating conversations with Indian Airlines and many attempted but fruitless attempts to contact Jet Airways in Delhi, I am still without any news of my backpack or it's imminent return. Difficult to think about much else at the moment but I will attempt to put this to the back of my mind for a moment and pen a few lines about the last few days. In between numerous trips to the shops/ markets to pick up bits and bobs I've needed to get by, I have managed to see a ...

Bye Bye Miss American PAI...

MY TRIP TO PAI, a novella. PROLOGUE: First of all, I think congratulations is in order, because someone (who is not you...by the way) wrote her last ever university exams of her life. People clapped, it was beautiful. "But Trish" you ask "Haven't you been prattling on about grad school?" "Shut up." I answer. (Mental note... add 'no exams' to my list of grad school criteria.) And, as some of my fellow graduates may know, finishing exams, especially your last ones ever, requires you to go out a...
