Isla Bastimentos - Day 1, general thoughts on trip

It's now 12:30p, just after noon on Thursday the 20th of March, 2008. We just got into our cabin at Beverly's Hill, on the island called "Isla Bastimentos" which is part of the Bocas Del Toro archipelago. It's about a 10-minute boat ride from the main island Isla Colon and main town in the area, Bocas Town. We got in quite early, around 7:30a, after a pretty bumpy flight in the 36-seat double-prop plane that brought us up here from Panama City. Getting here early didn't do too much for us, si...

Isla Bastimentos - Day 1, also Panama City Day 6

It's now 4:30p on Thursday 20 Mar, later on the same day as the previous post. We've been checking out the little town here on Bastimentos, including Tio Tom's for breakfast and Red Rooster for lunch. Both very nice, built right out over the water. Not fancy! But basic, decent food. Don't be in a huge hurry at either place. We had a nice chat with Jan and Keith from Spokane who were sitting at a nearby table, about their travels in China, the Chinese-style tea room they opened last year in Sp...

Isla Bastimentos - Day 2, thoughts on travel

It's about 9:30a now and I'm sitting on the front steps of our little hotel Beverly's Hill here on Bastimentos island. Here comes the rain again. It rained another torrent last night about dinner time. We ducked inside one of the restaurants and waited it out. They didn't seem to mind. It rained some more over night, then rained one more time this morning about 7a. Weather forecast is rain for several days. We'll see! Not much to do indoors here, other than write longer and longer Travelpod p...

Isla Bastimentos - Day 3, The Shop

Those who know me (Dave) know that I am am vegetarian, eco-friendly, against cruelty of any kind to animals. But there is one of God's creatures that I kill immediately upon sight - the mosquito. I do not delight in killing them, I feel guilty when I do, but I show them absolutely no mercy, no second chances, only immediate death, if I can swat quickly enough. And isn't it amazing how intense the itching from a mosquito bite can be? The itching is shockingly hard to resist! Yesterday I bought...

Isla Bastimentos - Day 4, Thai food, Cave, Joseph

We are sitting now in Bocas airport, waiting for our flight to return to Panama City. It's a few minutes before 6pm. I could have SWORN we were on the 3:30p flight to Panama City, I even reconfirmed the other day in Panama City! So naturally we arrived at the airport here by 2:30p, only to hear that our flight is at 6pm. I dunno, it's most likely my mistake rather than the travel professionals that do travel arrangements every day. Well, we got to sit in the Internet Cafe for an hour, then si...

Bocas Del Toro

So Lydia, Amy and I arrived in Bocas del Toro. Our plan was to stay on the island of Bastimento for a few days as we heard that Isla Colon, the main island was a little touristy.  We stayed in a place called Beverly,s Hill. Small cabinas on stilts. First day, we went on a boat trip out to see some dolphins, which i have not seen before.  They came right up to the boat, which was pretty cool to see.  After that we went to a restuarant called Coral Cay which is out on stilts in the sea.  We als...

Every night is ladies night

I left early in the morning for the border. I had heard that you needed to pay $30 to leave Costa Rica and was pleasantly surprised when it was free (it was free to enter Panama as well which was a bonus). A collectivo was waiting at the border to ferry backpackers to where the boat would take you down the old plantation canals and then out to the island of Bocas del Toro for $5. On arriving at Bocas and ...

What´s the price to Paradise? - $4 Balboa

Five hours bus drive separates Boquete from Almirante (via David). Our trip was basically moving from the centre of Panama to the South Coast to get a bus to take us up to the North again. Sadly there is no road from Boquete to the North as the volcano is in its potential way. The bus trip was in a small bus for 20 people, with a very good driver (they dont beat the speed limits in Panama) and comfortable seats with air ...
