Loi Krathong - Festival of Candles and Lanterns

Have spent 2 days enjoying the festivities in Sukhothai, one of the former capitals of Thailand. As a former capital, there are old temple ruins scattered around a nice park like area that are nice to view by bicycle. These festivities, called Loi Krathong (candle festival) coincided with the November full moon and are celebrated with little floats made of banana leaves with candles and incense. These are put onto the water and the person that releases them makes a wish. The temples were deco...

Sukhothai (World Heritage Site)

After an overdose of Delboy Tours, We Decided to travel independently by Government Bus up North! First Stop the quiet town of Sukhothai. It was nice to go to a rural town with less tourists. We hit jackpot with the guest house. "Ban Thai" It comes highly recommended The first morning after arriving in the early hours we decided to hire bikes and cycle around the amazing historical park which was the first we had seen of its kind. Containing the remains of 21 historical sites and 4 large pond...

Finally to Mae Sot

Yet another long and winding road. Through the northern Thai mountains from Chiang Mai to Mae Sot - finally travelling in the right direction. At the bus station I heard the young girl in front of me ask about a ticket to Mae Sot. Seems we would have to wait a few hours to get the direct bus so I told her I too wanted to go to Mae Sot and she, being Thai, was able to figure out another way to get there from here. It was to involve a big bus and then a transfer to a minibus for the last few ho...

Temples

P: Ancient Thai capital is famous for its old ruins and temples with Buddha statues, it is very nice place to visit. We stayed in new Sukhothai for a night, got up early in the morning and took tuk-tuk to the historical park. Even we went there in the morning, the heat was just too much. We rented bikes at the gates and then just rided around. Didn't spend that much time there, couple of hours(we could much more), then headed back to the town, had lunch and just just made it to the bus to Chi...

Sukhothai - more temples

We used our favourite Ayutthaya tuk-tuk to get to the bus station to catch the bus to Sukothai. We were somewhat bemused to find that the bus station was not a proper terminal but consisted of a couple of rows of dusty seats under a shelter beside a dual carriageway (that local people using cars, bikes and motos frequently and without any fear opted to travel the wrong way on). All the signs were in Thai and our ticket seemed to bear only a passing resemblance to the bus we thought we had boo...

On the bus

Almost 10pm, ancient, old capital of Thai (Lanna) kingdom-Sukothai. Cool, bright fluorescent lights, timer program on PC showing cost minute by minute, uploading videos of elephant riding Mood: glad to be here, missing company, twinge of sad on bus Today I had a leisurely morning as didn't sleep wel last few nights. Mattress was thin and hard, and actually got chilly under the fan. Thinking about bothersome things, lots of dreams. Mostly about having flown back to CA to do something? for a fe...

The Other Capitals

Bangkok was getting to be too much and while cheaper than the UK you could still end up spending far too much money than you intended. I moved north to the ancient capital of Thailand, Ayuttaya. After it was sacked by the Burmese the capital was moved to Bangkok. You can hire a bike for 10Baht a day(18p) and as it was a small town i biked around the ruins. During the day it seemed ok but at night the ruins the ruins were lit up it and was breathtaking ....... a bit like Blackpool Tower but ol...

Hell's Train

Chiangmai, Thailand

(edited email to my friend) I left Mae Sot a few days ago and took a bus to Chiang Mai with an ex-Vetnam Vet who works inside the Burma border to train Karen soliders. He is one of the most kindest and most interesting man I've ever meet. I cannot take his picture nor do I ask him of his last name since he is doing very dangerous work.... Coincidently, there has been a book that has just been published about the Mae Sot area by a journalist (Phil Thorton) called "Restless Souls" who lives in ...
