Founded around 1350, by 1700 Ayutthaya had become the largest city in the world with a total of one million inhabitants. A massive trading hub between China, India and Malaysia, Ayutthaya drew inhabitants from all over the world and in particular Portugal, France and the Netherlands. All this came to a quick end when the Burmese invaded in 1767 and …

I collected my backpack from the train station and got myself a ticket to Ayutthaya. The trains run quite often, but despite this, the train was late. When I finally got on, I was joined in my 3rd class seat by a lovely old lady. She must have been in her 80s and was very happy to be sitting next to me and practicing her English, which was …

Today we had planned for an early start. But, were woken up to rattling beds from the thunder storm, so a few more hours in bed were on the cards. 10am came around fast an we decided we needed to make a move as the storm had passed, an the weather was nice. We had breakfast and then rented old school bikes, winner! When we were offered helmets we …

I know we have just checked in but so far this is brilliant. Really nice lady checking us in (we were thinking of staying in a hotel that was 5 times the price but decided last minute to come here and have not regretted it since), extremely good value, very clean, looks like great beds (have not slept in it yet), great tuk tuk tour arranged by guesthouse and now sitting outside listening to animals with a cool beer, life could not be better!!
