Off to Chiang Rai

We left Chang Mai on the posh green bus service (only about £4 for a 4 hour drive) with a woman dressed like an air hostess handing out water and snacks, and lush air con!! We arrived in Chang Rai and grabbed a tuktuk which took us to the Baan Bua guest house, a motel like building set just off the main street with a tree shaded garden and lovely woman manager. We settled into our clean room and then headed off to the night bazaar for food. Chang Rai is a pretty small town with a large night ...

Heading towards Laos...

Hey everyone!!! So we are just sending a quick note that we are leaving Chiang Rai today and heading to Chiang Khong which is right at the border of Thailand and Laos. Tomorrow we will be taking the slow boat down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang in Laos. I'm not sure when we will be back online, so please no worries. We will take alot of pictures so we can share our boat ride. Talk to you soon!!! Keir & Kylie :)

Seriously, no cameras?

So, my camera finally gave up on me. It'd had a few hiccups over the last week or so and now refuses to turn on. It's okay, I'm in a 40k population town which must have a place which sells cameras. Nope.

3 hours to Chiang Mai (1.6million population, 2nd largest city in Thailand), 3 hours buying a camera, and 3 hours back. Brilliant day. I did, however, get a brand new camera at a bargain price.

Chiang Rai is a very chilled out place.. again. A great night market with bands playi...

Chiang Rai & area...end of Thailand for now!

I aboot to leave Thailand as I'm in Chiang Khong, on the border of Laos. Just have to catch a boat apparently to cross the river and then i'm in Laos...yeehaw! Will be making my way back to southern Thailand though, the islands, in a few weeks..after i make my way through Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia. I spent a couple days in Chiang Rai...had a lovely day yesterday as I embarked on my own personal tour. I rented a motorbike again for the day and scooted around to different town and villages an...

Bus Stations and Baan Bua

Chiang Rai lies on the Mae Kok River, we know, we've been over it at least twice; once when we left for the north and the other time when we made our first Cash and Carry trip in years and believe it or not it was to Makro. If you must visit wats this is not likely to be your first choice of destination but then some of us have more imagination. this sleepy provincial capital is an excellent place to wander and learn. Not in the tourist traps of the inevitable bar street (although there are d...

A Meal to Remember

... in Thai cooking, this dish is made with Indian curry spices and served with nicely chewy egg noodles (rather than rice) and topped with crispy noodles for texture. It's a real comfort dish and I wish I knew how to cook it as it is just the sort of dish I would rely on when I'm not feeling well. My main was the restaurant's party piece (the waiter was delighted when I ordered it - probably because it cost a bit ...

Chiang Rai

Today we went to a local hill tribe museum. it was a lot better than i had imagined. we had a short presentation about the different tribes living in the local area and then were able to walk round the musum to see quite a few of their possesions on show. Lunch that day was at a place called cabbages and condoms!! basically a charity group of ...

New Friends & New Adventures

... about it. At least we weren't like some other tourists who planted their cameras so close, the monks almost had to walk over them to get by. No surprise, that was also a no-no. Shopping for Economic and Community Development? The exhibit by this community development agency was pretty well organized, and also much needed. Essentially it informed visitors that traveling and being a tourist has an impact, and reminds us to try to be responsible in ...

They said it couldn't be done...

... a cool breeze and could sit in the open window seals. There was big evidence of slash and burn agriculture. Several hillsides were ablaze with fire and we cruised by. Smoke was in the air. At one point ash was coming down. Young naked children were playing in the water. Small wooden shacks or huts dotted the hillsides. Water buffalo, both black and red buffalo, gathered at their watering holes along the shore. Goats, with their babies trotting behind them ...
