It also happened to be Mardi Gras, so we watched from the town square as children dressed up like it was Halloween and had quite the celebration, throwing confetti and spraying silly string every which way. ... bought a ticket for a ship that was taking off in a few minutes. That never happens. We had comfortable seats and nobody was really bothering us except the lady wearing the weirdo flip flops (see picture). Upon arrival, we immediately ran to the ticket booth for the Laser Boat that was going to take us around the island by boat, including a stop to the Blue Grotto. ... lined with African merchants peddling fake Ray Bans and Louis Vuitton bags, the 2 XXX theatres on opposing corners, the washed up fish entrails and the piles of garbage, it's rather inviting. The frequent, reckless scooters careening between cars, merchants and other pedestrians reminded me not to let my guard down too much though. ... Of course we ended this day with another pizza and wine, and went to bed feeling like we made the best out of a city we didn’t really care for. Although we didn’t love the city, I am glad to say that we still managed to have an excellent time.
The next morning we had to wake up early to catch our train to Bari, where we caught a 16 hour ferry to Greece! We’ll be back soon with details on our last leg of the Europe adventure, ...
Many tourists looking down the crater as we do, few follow a guided tour cicling the whole monster. We add another hike downhills. Some spots have little or no vegetation yet. You see the structure of the lava flows. We meet some mushroom collectors. I collect some Vesuvuis gravel I plan to make art with back home. Heavy stuff - I guess it contains quite some share of iron.
