... Then we happened upon "Art on the River" - a whole area filled with a wide variety of artists. We ate lunch at "Clingman's Cafe" and sat outside on a sunny patio - lovely! We spent the rest of the day exploring the artists' studios and meeting the artists. We returned home for a bit of down time and then a pot luck dinner with Jim and Sue in our NEW HOME. We left this morning around 8:50 - travelling to Ashville today. It was a lovely drive through the mountains. More colour in the trees than what we saw in the park. 15 degrees today!! Arrived at Lake Powhatan State park near Ashville around noon. Found 2 campsites, set up camp, had lunch and headed out for a hike on Mt. Mitchell. We wanted to go to the top of the highest point in the eastern states ( Mt. Mitchell 6647ft high). Upon ...

... a delectable lunch, we took a drive through the Blue Ridge Parkway. We had heard that 2 weeks ago, the leaves were at it's peak. However, they were spectacular on our drive. We also stopped at the Pisgah Inn. All rooms were completely book for October, except for 3 rooms for October 30. The rooms from the outside looked small and dated, but had a balcony with 2 rocking chairs that overlooked the mountains. The rooms ran about $130 during peak ...

... and historical wonder. With fabulous mountain views from the South Terrace, we see why George Vanderbilt was captivated by this countryside as an “escape from everyday life.” Of course everyday life in a 250-room mansion is a bit different than our daily life or even our idea of a vacation retreat.

At Biltmore House the self-guided audio tours includes an amazing 42 rooms. At each room I gain ...
